Any suggestions for a 17/23 inch field/studio monitor? Was looking at SmallHD 1703 HDR but I could buy a car for that much.

Tripods - I borrowed a Manfrotto Compact yesterday and it was good, nicely lightweight, sturdy.
Is that a decent choice? My camera has an Arca-Swiss plate on the grip, I presume I get an adapter from Arca-Swiss to Manfrotto? Is there more than one Manfrotto clamp?

Anyone have/used Nikkor 35mm AF-S f/1.8?
It's for taking pictures of my newborn as they grow up. I have the 18-55 kit lens and a 50mm AF, which doesn't autofocus with my D40 (need AF-S).
Wondering whether I should just get by, or whether it is worth investing in one of these.

I'd get an old (manual) 85mm widest aperture you can afford.

It's a nice lens. Sharp and good for portraits if it's for baby pictures plus fast enough for good low light performance.
Not sure whether a D40 will make the most of it, I'm very happy with it with the D3200.

It's rated very highly on the DX bodies but I've never used it. I have to say for newborn & kids shots I love the old manual lenses. You'd probably need to guesstimate exposure tho.

So on that crop sensor that's 130mm to focus manually trying to shoot a little kid - no thanks.

I'd go for it, only used it briefly but it's a nice, small, high quality plastic lens that's pretty much perfect for your needs.

It gets easier the more you do it although 127.5mm is a mite long. I've got an ancient 105,2.5 that is stunning on full frame. If J0nathan has a newborn life itself will be a bit soft and blurry.

Yeah, 35mm on aps-c is probably my favourite combination for "general use". The fast aperture will get you more mileage when it gets dark, too.

Thanks for all the replies! I don't mind manual focus on the 50mm when he's sleeping, but I do feel I need something a bit wider with fast and accurate focus when he's alert. I see myself just leaving the 35mm on there 95% of the time. I'll see if I can pick one up.

I have one that's been sitting, virtually unused on a D3200 body since new. I just use that body with a 'Micro' 60mm really.
It has a filter and a box. Shall I PM you tomorrow (when I've got a min)?
