Because there's no chance of decoupling a nascent dictator (if that is what he his) from his power base if through polarisation you drive them further into his arms.
Every civil war and dictatorship I've ever read about starts with this extreme polarisation. I don't want to play a part in amplifying it, I want to find out how to derail it.

I guess you need to start with common grounds. Everybody wants similar things, a secure immigration system is a normal wish, but the execution of it is of course where things vary.
If that's what people want out of the Muslim ban, cos perhaps they don't even know exactly what they want. It's a long conversation. EDIT: Some say Muslim ban is even incorrect...so then there's that, you have to define the exact parameters of your concerns.
I think there are books about how to argue politely with opposites, that may be a good start. As despite my best efforts, 90% of the time Facebook conversations end in derailment of the original arguments, or get personal so it may be pretty tough.
However, I read somewhere facts only make people dig in more so I may be going at it wrong. Somebody smarter than me must have written A Book on how to at least get to agree to disagree, as that's usually a win already.
Emphasize away I say. Why would one not want to be antipolar to Trump et al? See the time article @dancing james posted earlier, the guy puts it well comparing the stuff happening now (adjusting to the new administration) to the beginning of historical dictatorships.
