Why cut into drinking time with training?

Which Speciality Phase do you reckon would be best for 2-5 minutes Vo2 max, anaerobic hill climb races?
Rolling Road Race seems to beat Climbing Road Race as it made for short, sharp efforts. Criterium would probably be good too, but they're all designed for repeatable hard efforts instead of one-off guts-out efforts...

• #759
I don't know, I've just been picking suitable individual workouts.
Could you not do the same thing? I guess it depends if you know what you're looking to do.
-
• #760
Bit early for hill climb training isn't it? Shit, season hasn't even started yet.

Planning the year innit. I'm done with running for this year so now it's back to bikes. Doing a few 25 mile TTs too so yes, I don't have to get specific until about August. Sweet spot base then build then one of the speciality options.
Just did specialty off the back of a summer of riding last year and it had a big effect so I've got high hopes for doing the whole shebang.
National HC is next to my sisters house too...
-
• #762
You should be looking at base now. If you start hitting sharpening intervals now you'll be fuxxored come October.
-
• #763
Yup. I'm only just start to hit build now, and that's for an April-Sept evening 10 season

Fucking thing crashed last night 1:20 into a 1.5hr turbo sesh, which I'd be pretty fucked off with if I didn't have the workout powermeter/Garmin'd.
CTConsole.exe or some shit, just bombed out for no apparent reason. Tried firing it up manually and I could see it was getting data from the Computrainer but would only last 20 seconds before crashing again.
Need to report it to them but... so... lazy...
Ok, reported.

How unreliable is virtual power?
Here are some numbers;
FTP test on new years day : 262w
Manually adjusted FTP 2 weeks later as workouts were very easy : 275w
FTP test Monday(13th FEB) : 338wNow, as much as I'd like to believe I'm pushing out 4.7w/kg I'm pretty sure I'm not. I know I tested badly on new years day, and I know I felt really good on Monday, but what else could be going on here? Could my turbo of lost some resistance in the past 6 weeks? Something else changed that could make this much difference? tyre pressure? It doesn't matter too much as I am only currently using power within trainerroad at the moment and won't be able to get a powermeter any time soon.
-
• #766
Maybe not reliable, but it should be consistent. Tyre pressure is my bet.
-
• #767
Also worth noting that resistance can change during usage due to temperature / the unit heating up. Especially noticeable in fluid type turbo's as the fluid gets less viscous when warmer, but also can affect the bearings etc in air/mag versions.
-
• #768
Cheers, I'll try and keep tyre pressures consistent. Mine is Mag with resistance adjuster via a cable, I guess the cable could of even stretched. Oh well, i'll just have to deal with the large numbers until I can get a smart trainer or PM or something.

"FTP test on new years day : 262w

Woefully innacurate, but pretty consistent.
I've used Virtual Power on rollers for about 18 months and recently switched to using a power meter. FTP has gone from 369w to 290w. It was clear from the start that VP was obviously a huge overestimate (I'm clearly not capable of 5.3w/kg) but 52x11 @ 95rpm produced a steady result in terms of both VP and HR. I always pumped my tyres to the same pressure right before each session too to make sure that wasn't a factor.
So it's a decent training tool I reckon, though it's a lot simpler now I'm using real power.

Haven't been able to ride for months after illness and injury, fitness basically back to zero. Thought I'd ease myself back into Trainerroad again and do a few very light spins with Netflix on.
Seems that TR and NF don't like running at the same time, either constant data dropouts, or frozen picture. Lame.
Sacked it off and just span with Rick and Morty on instead.
-
• #772
I was wondering where you'd been, it's been ages. I hope you're feeling better.
I use TR with things like VLC and Netflix at home on my mac without issues. Might it be a browser issue?
Hope to see you out on the roads soon.
-
• #773
I don't mind it being inaccurate but mine doesn't even seem to be consistent!
Yours was overestimating by 20%ish whish would put me down to a much more realistic 270w.
I've just ordered a new frame when I perhaps should of got a PM instead. No chance of finding a cheap PM so I might look for a cheap smart trainer instead.
-
• #774
Yep, been too long! Hoping to get back out properly once the fitness is built up a bit/lot more.
Was using Chrome, will test another time with another browser - 40mins killed me today, haha

It'll only be horrible for the first week or two, then that good feeling of steady gains being made. Good luck with it.
Climbing road race has decent intensity levels and may mimic similar length efforts.
