I just did this the other week, headed east from winchester and camping along the way. was fantastic and there are so many good places to refuel, in particular:
http://www.sustainability-centre.org/camping.html bit close to the start but nice campsite and has a great cafe
http://www.thesussexproducecompany.co.uk/ does a great breakfast/lunch and has good flapjacks etc.
saddlescombe farm, hikers rest is good too!did it fully loaded running 1 X 8 and was plenty doable. would be great on a cyclocross bike!
there is a really good ordinance survey for just the south downs way that you can pick up in winchester tourist advice

To put on the wall, to remind you never to attempt it again?

YES

Ok, this looks to be perfect TD training- only problem is I don't have a bike to do it, any recommendations on bike hire, either down there or London?
Plus who's up for this? (I'm also up for running sections too) -

Still tryna do this sscx...

Did it a couple weeks back. Go slow. Roast some meat. Climb a tree. Theres nothing special at the end to rush for.
Dont use campsites. Dont ask the fish man for anything.

Still tryna do this sscx...
Have you finished yet? Or are you in a chalky ditch somewhere?
-
• #362
No I mean I'm still trying to find someone to do it with.
Was planning to go with @platypus but he got busy on the day we were gonna go. I've just managed to lose my garmin as well so would definitely appreciate a ss riding buddy since I still struggle with basic navigation lol.
So it was a bit of a call out/request. Though I'm off on holiday for two weeks in a weeks time so if it doesn't happen this week it won't happen this month.
Bought a new pair of tyres just to do it as well.. -

I am free a lot in October, and definitely up for actually doing it, really gutted I had to drop out. Anyone else?
-
• #364
Sweet. I'm working on and off throughout October but can definitely make some time for it! :)
-
• #365
Assuming I can beg, borrow or buy a bike I'm totally up for this.

-
• #369
Don't you be getting any ideas for your next day out.
-
• #370
I was considering doing it (one-way!) ss on the pomp but our ride has put this idea firmly in perspective.
-
• #371
I'd take the mudguard off.
-
• #372
I am planning on having another crack at this end of Feb, likely over two days this time as I am a fatty.
-
• #373
SS on a cross bike? That would be a good day out ruined.
