  • i have a 7mm gap between the top of my steerer and the stem. is this safe?

Not really. Not as safe as it should be. I wouldn't be happy with it, at all.

could win 4mm with a lower stack headset (from fsa orbit equipe 28mm to cheapo con-tec 25,7mm) and lower stem (syntace, 38mm instead of the current kalloy 40)

Thomson X2 has a very low stack, about 35mm I think.

or am i clutching at straws here?

dunno. Whats so special about the fork that requires this level of bodge?

  • well cheapo is the criterium that is of the most importance.

frame was 35 quid shipped to berlin of off this parish. its ratty and cheap.

fork is an alpina vbrake that i already have. its ratty and cheap.

kalloy stem i already have. its cheap.

hence me wanting to pair them. ive got it now to 3/4mm with the kalloy stem, no top cap and smaller pre loader.
i could add a micro spacer on top of the bearing preload thingy to eliminate the rub of the slamdatstem and leave a micro lateral peekhole inbetween topcap and bearing.
and i could still win those 2mm with the syntace stem. is a 26mm though, so would have to nick the 26mm risers of off my other biek. or buy some 5er bars at the lbs.
