  • hivemind,

i have a 7mm gap between the top of my steerer and the stem. is this safe? i know consensus is to actually have a bit more steerer popping up above the stem but more slammage cannot be achieved with the current setup.

could win 4mm with a lower stack headset (from fsa orbit equipe 28mm to cheapo con-tec 25,7mm) and lower stem (syntace, 38mm instead of the current kalloy 40) and win a couple of extra by facing a couple of mm of off the headtube.

or am i clutching at straws here?

  • What does removing bearing cover give you?

Not really. Not as safe as it should be. I wouldn't be happy with it, at all.

Thomson X2 has a very low stack, about 35mm I think.

dunno. Whats so special about the fork that requires this level of bodge?

  • is this safe?

Only one of the stem clamping bolts is actually doing anything. Given that it's a steel steerer, stem damage and headset loosening are more likely than steerer snappage, but I still wouldn't ride it in the condition shown in the pictures.
