  • Certainly sounds like the easy option!

@Velocio for all your excessive cycling statistic needs, looks like GoldenCheetah might keep you busy: http://www.goldencheetah.org

  • Exhausted from the effort, I then go for a lie down.

It's not effort, it is the inconvenience.

I intended to do this when I got the 800, and did it a handful of times and generally just do not bother.

Upgrading is about convenience not about effort. If it's one more thing I don't have to remember to do, one more time I don't need to put the computer on, remove the SD card or GPS from the bike... then great. I'm far more likely to use it.

The 800 gets a few outings a year for solo rides where I need routing, an 820 that constantly syncs via the phone would be used on every ride.

The value I get from the 800 because of the inconvenience is low. The value I'd get from the 820 would be high if the sync'ing just means I'd leave it on the bike all the time and only charge it every few days.

  • ^this.

E.g. when I was commuting 7 miles, I didn't bother charging my Garmin every day. Sometimes I'd go a week or more without plugging it in to anything, and then I'd upload a load of rides in one go. And sometimes it was a bit of a faff to remember which bike I was riding etc.

Wireless upload as soon as you hit "end ride"just makes it so much more convenient.

One of the things I like about strava is tracking the mileage I've done on each bike, cassette etc. It's certainly not all about segments for me.

  • I charge my garmin about once a week. Even then I'm just plugging it into a mini-USB old school blackberry charger at work. Can't sync via a work computer as no admin rights to install garmin connect anyway.

    So my options are:

Wait until I get home, then start up laptop, find mini-USB, let it all sync, remember what bike I was on and so forth.

    Or.

Get to work/home, press a button to end the ride, press another button to save it. Sync automatically and I take a quick peek at strava on my phone to see if I'm faster than I was yesterday.

I definitely prefer the second option and I don't regret spending £100 on a 2nd hand 510 purely for that feature.

  • I've uploaded every proper ride (I don't Strava commutes) since I bought my 800 in December 2011 and I have to admit I've never thought "that's inconvenient" but I can see it's more convenient.

I'd just check how stable/reliable the 820 is. Garmin have a habit of releasing products that are frustratingly unstable/buggy and I'm reluctant to upgrade my 800 because it's very stable and reliable.

Trust me when I say that your Garmin freezing or otherwise crapping out on you when you're relying on it to get you round a long ride is not convenient!

I think @hippy feels the same way ;)

  • commutes are proper ride though. In fact it is the best ride as you are not using a car or other motorised transport. Even commuting has a fittness benefit even though it may not be an intense ride.

  • True dat - Me Abacus to count miles.

  • For running watches Bluetooth or Wifi uploading is invaluable. I don't ever seem to mind plugging in my bike Garmins though. Think I can afford to be more patient with it.

  • Thanks guys!

  • How do you stop people from giving you kudos?

    It's terribly irritating

  • Block them

  • Disable notifications in settings.

  • If your going to get garmin with all those additionals I would be more inclined to get the 1000.

I borrowed a 810 which for me the bluetooth connectivity is awesome but the device i have heard mixed review of its durability, bit like the 510s. (EDIT: echoing what Fox is saying really)

so reverted back to the 800 - work disabled all usb connection until i put a request it and explain why - so have to take the sd card out and put that into the card reader - which in all honesty i dont mind

  • Stop riding so epic.

  • Keep your rides private? @Hovis haha!

  • Strava ur sleep or GTFO

  • Only 6 hours of sleep? You're not training hard enough.

  • Who's Tom Crofts?

  • Alright! I'm not getting too hung up on segments but I like the look of the Stamford Hill - Just The Hill one you're currently topping. I swear some people go out at 3am to get good traffic-free times on these things

  • Also the all-time PR definitely hitched a ride on the back of a van, I am happy to point that finger

  • Ah, just had a look at my PR of that, it was back when I was about 7 or 8kg lighter than I currently am and was on a morning commute, riding my fixed gear, so would've been 48x15 gearing. I like climbing on fixed.

I like the seven sisters road climb too, set my PR on fixed gear there too :)

Basically though, they were roads I rode pretty much every day for 3 years, so eventually everything would come together and I'd get a nice run with a tailwind and no traffic, no red lights etc.

  • Is there a way to fix a Strava activity?

I tried using my Android Wear watch to record the commute this morning after having failed to record the commutes at the end of last week. But instead I appear to have only managed to record being stationary right at the end.

Can things be manually entered into Strava, or edited? Or is this all part of an anti-fibbing thing and it's better to lose data than to have it manually logged?

  • Go to the Strava website, on the top right hand of the page, there is a + button, select the add manual activity and you can enter the duration and distance, but not much else if memory serves.

  • Ah, that works.

But it's a bit odd. Let's you fill in certain fields but will disregard them (i.e. elevation... I just copied the value from a prior commute along a similar route, but it just ignores them).

It's probably easier to download a prior activity, change the dates and upload. Heh, maybe I should do that next time.

I won't got back and fill in gaps, but it's nice to be able to overwrite a broken activity with a manual one.
