    It would actually be safer if you binned the cover and set the spacer directly onto the compression ring, assuming it has a metal compression ring. You miss out on the dust protection, but at least your headset adjustment isn't going to change suddenly.

  • I'll do that, I guess if I'm getting a new headset in a few days anyway protecting from dust doesn't matter too much. Thanks for your help!

  • Yeah that's no problem to do. I've been riding for a year without a cover on top of my headset and I'm not dead, my forks turn smoothly.
