CA were being very aggressive on the PR, and I think quite a few hacks bought into the idea of some social data Svengali through a mixture of not asking tough enough questions and the story being kinda cool, in a James Bond villain sort of way. The LittleAtoms piece is probably closest to the truth IMHO.
