  • Evening All, my HTPC has been playing up recently, either failing to boot up and sometimes turning off by itself. I'm confident the boot issue is due to a failing hard drive and I think the sudden powering off is due to the CPU overheating. I notice in the BIOS the CPU heats up to 100C within a minute or two of switching the machine on from cold, does anyone know what could be causing this please?

The machine is clean throughout, no dust etc on the CPU heat sink, likewise the CPU fan is clean. From what I've read online the problem could be dried out heatsink thermal paste, but would this really cause the CPU to heat up so rapidly? The CPU isn't being overclocked and the machine doesn't get used for any gaming etc. I've order d some thermal paste, so hopefully that'll do the trick, but any thoughts would be appreciated, cheers.

Update: new heatsink thermal paste did the trick, cpu temp stable at 50C now, who knew it would make such a huge difference!
