Dynamo Lights

  • Gonna be picking up an Igaro D1 soon to go with my schmidt hub/edelux front/b&m rear .
Is anyone on here particularly handy with a soldering iron and prepared to help me make a nice clean installation in return for beer/cake/money? Based in E17.
I wouldn't trust myself not to make an expensive mistake :| I also don't own any of the necessary bits and bobs...

  • Shrink wrap and twist them together? Or use those crimp-on connectors No soldering needed.

  • Fair enough. Maybe it'll look less scary when it's all in front of me.
Was hoping to trim cables to length to get rid of all the coils of excess cable I've got going on at the moment.
Time for a trip to maplins I guess.
Are people keeping everything in tt feedbags? The Igaro looks delicate in pics but presumably it'll be fine of the headtube where they suggest or does it want a little more protection? So many questions, electricity and bieks confuses me!

  • Anyone have any experience with Klite lights? They look interesting, although expensive.

Well after spending all day thinking and looking at lights i've decided that the iq2 isn't that ugly, and having built in usb is a massive plus. Shame there isn't an aluminium kilte/supernova type light with built in USB, and remote switch. Functionality > form :-(

  • After multiple dead b+m iq2s, I'm looking at a different light/charger set up, has anyone used the b+m iq-x? Seems good price and a friend rates it but interested in other opinions.
Probably alongside a d1 igaro, how easy is it to make a switch to switch between the two?

  • I trimmed them and then after doing a bit of a shit job stripping them invested all of about £5 in a nice auto wire stripper. I still left a fair bit of excess in case something went wrong and for future re-wiring.

Igaro needs to be kept in the air. They get too hot in bags.

  • I didn't bother. Just wired them up full time and plug/unplug USB stuff as required. Figured adding a switch is just another point of failure.

  • Edit: check Igaro thread.

  • Just to check, you just wire both straight to hub and everything works fine and dandy? That works better than a switch for me if it does.

  • Yep, take both pairs of wires, line them up, strip them the same, pair them (twist, smoosh, whatever), stick them in the hub connector and Bob's your uncle.

  • Perfect, that is exactly what I wanted to hear.

  • Well yes but where is my SP hub connector?

  • Do you need one? I bought three from SJS Cycles so have some spares.

  • Cheques will not be honoured.

  • I have an IQ-X and Igaro on my audax/touring bike. The IQ-X is great and being able to mount it upside down is very useful (if you like a front rack). I run the two in parallel, so you don't need to switch. However, I've found that you can't run them both together if you need full brightness from the IQ-X while charging something. The dynamo (Shimano DH-T780) just can't give enough power for that. I guess you'd have the same issue with any set up on that front.

  • Isn't running them both only a problem if you've got a device plugged in to the igaro?

  • Don't use USB charging and lighting. Charge a cache battery during the day with lights off, use cache battery at night while lights have full power.

  • Yeah, that's my plan.

  • Feel beaten as ordered two.

  • Sorry, that's what I was trying to say but obviously wasn't clear!
@hippy yes, I just need to find a (semi) decent one with passthrough charging for garmin etc when needed. Any suggestions?

  • Go big or go home!

  • I used two. Pass-through feature is a bit overrated.

Zendure something or other and that other brand that does good ones... hmm my memory is clearly fucked. Let me find out.

    EDIT:

    Anker 13000mah
    Anker 6400mah
    Zendure A3 10000mah

I like Anker products. In the end the 130000mah one didn't get taken with me. Anyone want to buy it?

The Zendure is meant to do charge through but I found devices would still detect that I'd stopped pedaling and do their power-shuffle thing which I can't imagine is good for Garmins which are already flakey.

  • Thanks for the details. I have Anker and like that too - which model is the 13000mAh one? I might be interested.

  • Perfect! That is the exact set up I want to go for (except I'll be using a SP dynamo) so knowing it's working for you is all I need. Thanks!
