you love wearing out carbon rimz?
-
• #3153
u mad? I sell before even the chain/cassette is worn !
-
• #3154
What's not refined about them?
-
• #3155
chainstay length, maintenance, weight, 1 million standards
-
• #3156
Chainstay length? I can't say I'd even considered this as an issue.
1 million standards? Basically flatmount or postmount?
Maintenance? Rebleed annually (or less), change pads less often than on a rim brake bike.
I don't get how any of this means discs aren't refined (in use or functionality) and I can't see how any of this means it's better to stay with rim brakes, especially for a #buyer who'll be onto something different soon anyway :)

Once I sort out the lever throw, I'll just wear headphones to block the squealing and grit noises. Job done.
-
• #3158
Too late, I jumped ship and I like them. The niggles can be forgiven in exchange for the braking power and not fucking up a set of rims every year. Also, disc brakes allows fat tyre clearance which is great since the UK only fund racism and misery now, not road repairs.

So, can I use the new DA levers with my current flat mount calipers or not?
-
• #3160
Cycling is a constant cycle of standards fuckery - not even like we've defaulted to a single way to mount rim brakes.
Disc brakes are good enough to use now, who cares if your system is redundant in 5 years.

I read somewhere that it shouldn't be an issue, planning on going this route myself when they're available (and not £1000). The levers come packaged with the caliper apparently so you might only be able to buy as a job lot.

• #3162
Cheers, might not be worth the upgrade if I have to buy everything but I do love throwing money down the drain when it comes to bikes...
Do you know when they're likely to become available?

Soon-ish

Even the pros dont have them yet so I am guessing Q3 2017 at least ..

Pffft pros...
This is ME we're talking about here. Proper fuckin' rider, not some sponsored chauffeured 6hr-is-a-long-ride princess.
Gimme my brakes!
-
• #3165
Yeah, can't imagine they'll be out for a while but Shimano had a press test event last week so it could be sooner.

People who have multiple wheelsets for one bike, what do you do about different rotor thicknesses? I have a centrelock wheelset with 'thin' discs and a 6 bolt wheelset with 'thick' discs. Currently got spyres set up to the centrelock wheelset, but when I put the 6 bolt set in, they rub both pads all the way round the wheel rotation. Buy thin 6 bolt discs?
-
• #3168
Aren't they self-adjusting after a couple of 'brakings'?
-
• #3169
Adjust them.
-
• #3170
hydraulics self adjust so get them?
-
• #3171
Yeah - they'll adjust to the thinner rotor and the thicker rotor will no longer fit.
The answer is - use the same hubs and the same rotors across all wheelsets.

nah, just wiggle a screwdriver between the pads and pop the fatter rotor in. jobs a good un.
-
• #3173
I just force the calipers open with the disc when I've tried to remove lever throw by closing pads up with the wheel out. Worked thus far.
-
• #3174
Not with spyres. Full cable calipers
-
• #3175
Effort to reset them every time I change wheels
On a srs note, I am using R785 with their flat mount calipers and its not a refined system overall .. its just excels in one bit; wet braking .. which brings me back to my OG point of discs arent there yet and its too early to jump ship especially if you ride the amount you do @hippy
