I can't remember noticing so many reports of this type of crash in such a short time before--still no idea if it's just more coverage or a real increase. Not good either way.

We should be considering calling them car crash men who on the side also fight fire.

Another prominent crash pattern is that of the motorway pile-up. One person died in this one:
There have been far worse such incidents, with dozens of fatalities in some cases, and the involvement of hundreds of cars. While statistically motorways are the safest type of roads (largely due to the ban on walking, cycling, and other forms of non-motorised traffic, as well as slower motorised traffic), pile-ups are the main factor pushing up the averages, unfortunately.

Oddly, this sort of thing happens quite regularly, too:
I can remember at least half a dozen such incidents since I've lived in London. The latest one that I heard of happened at the E&C northern roundabout.

Sadly, another very serious bus-pedestrian crash:

One of those fatal crashes that make it to court, really awful in its randomness and stupidity:

A bad crash in Lea Bridge Road. Hit-and-run, but arrests have been made.

This is also unusual and unbelievably bad luck. It's relevant to cyclists riding that way, as with a slow-moving gritter it is conceivable that a cyclist could have overtaken him in this situation. Obviously, they would have approached much more slowly than the motorcyclist probably did, but they might likewise not have been seen if they had been alongside. I expect that the driver's normal practice in gritting there would have been reviewed and is no longer carried out in this way.

^^ Sadly, one of the victims of the Lea Bridge Road crash has died.

An interesting case here. It is alleged that the driver changed his statement from what he said immediately after the crash. Also, the motorcyclist seems to have been driving quite slowly, well within the speed limit, which suggests that the combined speed of the bus and the motorcycle must have been high enough to cause the fatal impact:

Nver posted in this thread, but this shocked and saddened me http://www.tallahassee.com/story/news/2017/01/23/man-walking-barefoot-across-america-killed-florida/96950426/

That's truly horrible. What's more, his last blog post contains this photo:
His blog was called 'not going to make it'.
He protested against environmental destruction and was killed on the 101st day of walking. What springs to mind is how politicians are often assessed after their first 100 days--a completely arbitrary number, of course. One does wonder what the verdict on Trump will be after the first 100 days.
RIP Mark Baumer.

There are indications that this seems to have been the outcome of another stupid urban race. The other driver hasn't been found yet:

Similar, two drivers doing 60 in a 30 zone, jumped a red light, killed a student, careless, not dangerous:

I remember reading about that at the time. On the topic of drivers walking free, here's a bad crash in France in which the guilty driver received a suspended sentence despite flagrant recklessness and causing much misery:
I hope John regains more control again, but it'll be hard work for everyone involved in the rehabilitation.

One of my sister's best friends was killed in Tulse Hill when she was hit by a car Wednesday (25 Jan) morning about 07:20. I gather she was just crossing the street, not on her bike. If anyone happened to be passing Thurlow Park Road, at the junction with Birkbeck Hill, SE21 and could provide the police with any information, could you please get in touch with them.
Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any information is asked to contact the detectives from the SCIU on 020 8543 5157 or contact police by Twitter @MetCC.
You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.http://news.met.police.uk/news/appeal-following-fatal-collision-in-lambeth-216321

Grim. Really, really grim.
I'm wondering how circumstances conspire so that someone with a record of dangerously & recklessly fleeing the police in a vehicle is allowed to do the same again.

There seem to have been a lot of crashes between drivers of lorries/cars and pedestrians in the last few weeks. :(

I once met one of the firefighters who goes into burning buildings with breathing apparatus or attempts to rescue people trapped in cars.
