They do it at dog groomers over here for about 5 bucks. Some breeds need it more than others, fortunately mine isn't one. I suspect it's one of those things that after you've done it a few times, is no big deal but the idea is a bit grim...

I don't think I would have a problem with it as I have had to do some repugnant stuff in the past. He gets arsey when his temperature is taken. I think the nurses can give it a go.

Boss just adopted a 5month old german pointer. Previous owners couldn't cope. Poor bugger has zero training and is a bit boisterous.
Can anyone recommend a trainer in the Herts region? -

He's doing great thanks!
No accidents in over a month, recall training going well so is going off lead a little now.
We've left him at home for two weeks while we go skiing. We miss him loads but he's living with a dog trainer we know and trust (and who he loves also), who also owns the local dog walking company so he's getting to meet and play with other dogs every day. Sounds like he is getting on really well.
Can't wait to get back, the little fucker has really got under our skin.

The vet took a look at where he had been chewing and there was nothing obviously causing it. She said she wouldn't need the muzzle to do his glands but Mrs S insisted for her own safety. It turns out he really wasn't keen and in his haste to turn and have a go it increased the amount of squeeze used by the vet. That and the alteration of the angle of attack caused "the contents" to shoot up her arm/face*. She was ready for the second one but declared that all was well in that department as it turned out. It would seem he just had a bit of a chew and has started a vicious circle.
*Worth the fee in itself from what I've heard. -

Thanks everyone for making me rethink getting a dog...

Oh dear God. Nobody mentioned this before we took the plunge!

@hats @Stonehedge it's not all bad, just think about the long walks in the wind, rain and snow!
The best thing of all is there's always someone else to blame for the smell of the room. -

going to the Stag
Great tip, loved it there.

Are puppy training classes a load of bollocks or a worthwhile investment? Not long until we collect the little fella and we're getting nervous.

When our puppy is older we'll be taking him here http://www.rosswaydogtraining.co.uk recommended by our dog walker.

most dog training is actually owner training. and often a good idea

Puppy parties at your vets are good for socialising your dog with other dogs, should be free so nothing too lose. I would say formal training is definitely worth it. But it depends on what sort of dog you have and what it's personality is like. We have a 10wk old working cocker spaniel so for us it's essential 😀

Puppy. First one. Really trying to make it go well. Will.have much more space come summer but for now cooped up in an LA apartment so using the time to really try to train him well.
edit: well that was supposed to have an image. upload failed I guess. better luck next time.

Wow, great link, that's spookily close to where we live in Tring, are you local and if so can you recommend a vet too?

I'm in Watford, I can recommend http://www.parkveterinary.co.uk/vebo/index.php?idPage=7
But probably a bit far for you. I have a friend with a dog who lives in Tring, let me see if she can recommend someone. -

Otto at 4 months.
The two weeks with a dog trainer while we were on holiday has made such a difference. He has learned a lot about how to behave around other dogs is walking on his lead in heal position perfectly and even rings a bell by the door when he needs a piss or dump.
I don't think we'll go on holiday without him for two weeks again, we missed him too much. Shorter holidays or bringing him with us from now on.

He rings a bell to be let out?! Awww. Ok, I want a dog again.

Tinkle for a tinkle. Peal for a piss. Etc.
-
• #448
Could you get a few different bells so he plays different tunes depending on what he needs?

Peggy arrived at the weekend. Slightly broken first night, but she seems remarkably happy in her new home so far. Massive spoiling and attention from the kids probably helps.

Very cute!
It's not worth spending money on the vet to do this it's pretty straight forward.
