  • Yeah that's slow on everything!

  • Just found out Apple have killed off the 11" Air, just as mine is starting to show its age. It's the perfect on the fly editing machine for me.

I guess I'll see if I can fine a second hand one of the last gen available, any suggestions? Gonna be a bugger cause I do need that 8GB ram upgrade.

I'd really prefer not to get an 13" one. Too big.

I'm another happy 11" MacBook Air owner and will be going down the Surface Pro route when it gives up the ghost.

As others have said, you get the sense Apple killed it to boost iPad sales. I think Microsoft have the edge in the tablet as laptop stakes however.

  • the 12'' macbook is pretty smart, although only has 1 usb port.

  • And a headphone jack.

  • 11" MacBook Air (...) As others have said, you get the sense Apple killed it to boost iPad sales

..to boost MacBook sales I'd have thought?

I remember, just when it came out, looking at the new MacBook, right next to the Airs -
seemed like the proper advancement.. lighter, thinner, (imo) better keyboard, much better screen..
..can't speak for performance as I have not worked on it / know nobody who does personally - but I think they're super nice little machines. Well, pricey though.

  • Yeah that is a real annoying bug, isn't it...

  • Can't afford to buy / don't need an iPad pro but do need an iPad, is the iPad mini 4 or the iPad air still worth buying? I just need a basic tablet that can do internet, note taking and basic tasks, maybe the occasional silly game or 2 when I am bored... have my 2016 MBP arriving any moment now so really just need a basic tablet on the go...

  • Everytime i open my New 2015 retina macbook pro up, for about 1 min the screen looks like the colours are bleeding/glitchedout/or hue is way off, then it goes to normal again. Same happens with my gf macbook too she brought new from apple in september.

    Why does this happen?
    is there a fix ?
is it defect? i cant really find a proper answer through google search either, looks like a graphics problem

  • My wife still uses her OG mini. I think they are great little tablets. Just grab one of them...

  • OG? original? Sorry been a long day (week)

  • Yep! She says it's crap and slow now but not enough for her to actually buy herself a new one...

  • I actually have one of those, but it was a present for my mum, the last ever present I got her as she's passed away now, so I don't want to use that at all. It still has all the stuff she put on it...

  • make sure you charge it every now and again and keep a laptop that it can sync to. I can't use my iPhone 2g as my laptop is too new :(

  • Yeah, I do charge it once every few months. Sync or no sync doesn't matter too much as she used it as a standalone machine anyway...

  • Has anyone had hiccups in audio playback from iTunes when using Airplay?

My Mac is connected with ethernet and never gets the hiccups but boyfriend's Air is connected with wi-fi and gets bad hiccups and sometimes complete gaps in playback.

It happens through our living room hi-fi (with an Airport Express plugged in) and our kitchen hi-fi, which is a Marantz mini system with built in Airplay.

So I figure it's not either of the receivers or the network that's the problem, as it's fine via ethernet, so does the router seem like the most likely culprit?

  • I get it sometimes when using Soundcast to play music over Chromecast, it stops if I close and reopen the app so I always assumed it's a signal interference or buffering thing. Strangely it only happens with audio.

  • Mine is pretty damn solid, never had an issues when playing from iMac in the study to hifi in the living room... wonder if its interference with your wifi (too many networks)?

  • Girlfriend's iphone 5s is refusing to charge. tried it with multiple cables and plugs/USB but no joy. It either gives the cable charge icon thing on screen, or occasionally the boot screen, but then it goes black immediately. Tried the hold both keys reset thing. There's no fluff etc in the charging port and all cables click in place nicely.

I have an apt at genius bar tomorrow but is there anything I cant try in the meantime?

  • what's the go to back up utility, since my kernel task panic, have decided I need to back up things in case everything shits the bed.
Is Time Machine the best utility for backing up specific folders? material? I'm looking to back up iphoto library, or some variation of a folder of the best photo's, the majority of my writing work/documents and some video clips/finished work.
Think the edited highlights of my creative life, rather than a full back up.

    Any thoughts?

    Let me know

  • Get a cheap 1TB drive and make a copy of all your documents, store it off site (in a welsh mountain obvs :)). Use Time machine to keep running backups on an internal HD, time machine will keep your library/applications/os backup too. Occasionally refresh your off site backup. Have a stack of DVD's with your most important documents on.

Worst case scenario your off site and time machine fail leaving you with nothing but a few DVD's of old photos/music etc. Normal case, you have Time machine restore your mac to it's most recent state.

You can do all this for the price of 1 3TB drive, 1 1TB drive and some DVD's. Think that's too expensive? Carry on and maybe the day never comes when you need it.

  • I have two TM-backups on separate discs and two cloned backups of the ssd on other discs. And everything important in Dropbox.

TM is super handy but I find it a bit limiting as my ssd is too small to contain all my work so some of it is in Dropbox only. Hence getting backup disc no 5 & 6 where I'll keep my work, photos and music.

    Belts and braces baby.

  • Makes sense.

Can you run time machine on an internal drive, can you get it to back up every couple of weeks/months, rather than hourly/daily?
I've got a spare 1tb drive which I can use internally to back up the boot drive, so was hoping to pop that in every couple of months, back up and then take out, until I need to do it all over again the next quarter. Possible to do with time machine? Or would I just need to get a case and use it as an external?

  • I've mentioned before that you can get Office on an annual subscription for about £40, possibly cheaper if you shop around, which comes with 1TB of online storage which allows substantial backups and is about half the price of Dropbox, iCloud and the rest (plus you get Office).
