  • I'd happily give you the serial number of my stolen one and if you manage to track it down, all yours. It's annoying I can't get a like for lke replacement... :-(

  • The MacBook has a nicer screen than the Air too...

  • Razer Blade Stealth?

  • Would it recognize an external GPU if you attached one?

  • @Well_is_it Yeah, I get they want to shift more iPad Pros.

@Soul You reckon the Macbook is that fast? Even for photo editing? The processor isn't up to scratch from what I can see (and friends using it).

@salmonchild That looks interesting... windows though... not sure I can do it lol.

  • Probably not. eGPU with macOS is shaky at best.

  • Yes, it is possible, but another bodge/hack...

pretty much what @Well_is_it said. I've looked into eGPU's before.... got close to trying...

  • Pretty sure @6pt & @amey use theirs for some photoshop etc...

It wouldn't replace a macbook pro as a full time machine but if it's replacing an Air, then it's definitely faster.

  • I was on a return spree, finally settled on a mint 2nd hand macbook air, hopefully my last apple device that I'd have to pay for.

FWIW they are great if you can afford. There are some M5 in the refurb store: http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/macbook

My PS use is quite minimal at 72dpi and/or mainly vector based. Not sure it will hold up a photographer's usage. You can always buy and return ;)

  • // cc @photoben

I use it for Illustrator fiddling and InDesign work. It's handled everything I throw at it, from shit infographics to shit giant reports, as well as some silly complex .ai docs (big maps, lots of objects), but as +soul says it won't replace a full time pro machine (my eyes aren't good enough for the tiny screen and I can't plug it into my ageing yet still lovely thunderbolt display)

My pro does its time templating/setting projects up and then I use my MacBook on the go/weekends away/etc to fill in the blanks. My pro hasn't left the house since I bought it. I love the little thing's form factor, perfect as a travel/on-site machine.

  • Must resist buying one... really like them to be honest but not sure they'd be too hot for full time work. Lets be honest though, some of us here started off using high end machines that had way less power than our current phones, actually, prob all of us... except for any of those millennial cunts.

  • Who uses Sketch again? Is it any good? Easy to learn? We use potato chop but a new client is sending us everything in sketch files which is a pain in the ass. Wondering if worth purchasing/learning or if just converting them to PSDs is the option? If the latter is even possible of course.

  • Who uses Sketch again? Is it any good? Easy to learn?

Yes, about 15 mins. If you can use keynote you can use sketch.

  • Yeah, I reckon my little air will keep going until they update the MacBook, then I can decide. The intel M chips just don't have the processing power that the i series does.

  • Lots of Sketch evangelists here for good reason.

  • I learnt to e faster in Sketch than PS in a week.
    It's mint.
    PS is shit.

Really hard to learn though, as a consultant I can guide you through the transition. £750 a day to you mate.

  • As some said in here wait for the new 15" and now the 15" is getting the upgrade it should have had in the first place. New processor and 32gb ram also hopefully the battery issues sorted!

  • Doubt it will get that until September...

  • I'm really enjoying the Macbook - it struggles with some excel work I find though :'(

  • Ive just stuck a SSD in mine so I'll wait.

  • The battery issue has been sorted, if we are thinking about the same issue - the shockingly short life on the 2016 15inch model? It was a bug on Safari which has been tested in the new MacOS beta update and will be released once the beta cycle is finished.

  • I've never found excel too smooth.

Thinking about it my works 2015 15 inch mbp iris struggles with big ps files on a 4K screen so doubt the MacBook would manage.

  • The only real persisting issue is the price that seems to be a bug.
    Doubt they'll fix it though.

  • Yeah, I'm talking a big excel file as well 100k+ rows of data and some natty formulas so not too surprising.
