Scarlett Johnasen is good in just about everything she does.
That zoo one she did with Matt Damon's shit.

Watched Manchester by the sea last night. Found it a little boring. Typical over hyped January movie.
Completely off the mark for me.
Will catch La la land sometime this week I'm sure

Terrible film, and I suspect an allegory for brexit. Plucky Brit shows up experts, elites, and most importantly, rude Europeans.
And Hugh Jackman is Trump.

I saw La La Land last night.
I thought it was good but not great. Nice story, nice message (love > ambition), nice leads and scenery (Gosling, Stone and LA all beautiful), and some great swoopy camera.
They just keep singing and dancing for no reason though. I found myself at various points tensing up and thinking 'please don't sing again.'
Yet I can't remember a single song or a particular bit of dancing, whereas I saw Singing in the Rain once and Good Morning is still stuck in my head.
It's another film in the great tradition of films about Hollywood and its role in the American Dream. We get it, directors and audiences love nostalgia, but watching people achieve their dreams of being not particularly useful members of society wasn't really life changing.
7/10

John Carter of Mars
Why had I never heard if this epic Yet derivative/referencial Sci-Fi till yesterday. Old school like time machine or journey to the centre of the earth with Bollywood costumes. Entertaining -

It's daft but awesome...
I was turned onto it by John M. McCarthy, the Memphis exploitation maestro... He's nuts about it...

It was marvellous but lost me at the conclusion. Biased as occasional acquaintance of Daniel S/K though.

Enjoyed first 20 mins, the remaining 14 hours were a slog. There were some solid gags in it but I found it too much of a bodge of different styles. Massive fan of Taika Waititi (I'm delighted he's been given the reigns of a tent pole like Thor:Ragnarok) and I really loved some of the characters but found it to garbled compared to eagle vs shark etc - the weird switch at the end of the main cop (accompanying child welfare rep) from bumbling stoner to efficient hero and moral lynchpin etc. It was just too jumbled for me. Then again i didn't like the apple animation in eagle vs shark so it's not like he hasn't got a track record for mishmash work.
Scarlett Johnasen is good in just about everything she does.
The Wilderpeople film has no appeal to me whatsoever but I'm going to acquiesce to all the applause on here
