• I promise I was only joking. when I saw yours with the Albatross bars it made me happy to think someone else has discovered how excellent old Kona's are to convert.
I love yours by the way. and the new bars look great, I've been thinking of changing mine to something similar!

  • I thought as much. My lava dome really is a lovely frame, and after I added v-brakes it now stops incredibly well too.
I changed mine, because I tried to put my backpack on the rack one day, and the steering went from great to really sketchy - my thinking was, that a wider bar would provide more leverage to counter the wheel flop made worse by the extra weight over the front wheel.

Now the ride is incredibly stable - I had feared the worst about putting a 50mm stem on, after having tried a 80mm with on one Marys on a road bike - but this setup is something else!

  • I'd guess there's good reasons for yours staying that way for 5 years.
It looks more comfortable than super wides.

  • yeah I love it, it's super comfy but as @MisterMikkel says it's got tricky handling when loaded up.
I think i'm going to do something similar with a shorted stem and risers.
I do the shopping on it and it's not easy to ride back home afterwards!

  • I was considering 80mm w/Mary's. is it not great?

  • Oh, it's terrific setup on the Kona. I was referring to one time where I put an 80mm and mary's on a road bike. That was awful, or at least about 10 times twitchier than I like.
Honestly, I think you'd have to wider than the Mary's to get to full benefit.
Something like 680-730mm wide, as I recall the Mary's are 640mm

  • redwood from '94 or something. thanks :)

  • Nice!
    That colour is ace.

  • I'm sure it's probably been said before, but that's a massive amount of front-loading, especially for a frame that's not been designed with that in mind. Surely by this point, spreading the load between a front and rear rack is going to have more impact on handling than a short stem and wide bars?

  • yes, you're quite right and it's very rare for me to do that. normally there's no more than a few Kilos up front. I'd put a back rack on but normally I have a my daughter on the back.
In fact the only reason I took the photo of it so overloaded was because it was 'my record' and made the bike unridable.

  • Wussed out and got Nelson at LBC to put the new gears on the tourer, put the NOS Mavics on as well as some onza (not flat) flats with nice sweep

  • Wtf is that bungie doing?

  • Replacing the top cap surely

  • gopher slingshot innit

  • its an elasticated pedestrian bumper. they just spring right off.

just had some stuff bungeed down and this keeps it out the way when not in use...

  • Got started on the Replacement for the Vagabond this week . Put the wheels and tyres in just to see how much room there is. There's loads!! 27.2 2.25's in there at the mo.

    Bombtrack Hook EXT

  • I really like that!
Don't let your hood covers sit like that for too long tho.

  • Shit, I knew i forgot to do something before i left work. Hopefully they will settle back into shape.

  • ;-(

It does sometimes leave a mark that cant be undone. Hopefully yours are fine and the rubber is fresh and will settle back in.

  • Since there are loads of 27,5" wheels/tyres in here, but the inch sizes don't make sense ( as discussed here ) I think we should change the name of the thread accordingly.

    I suggest:
Monster, Monsteur, Monstour, 559/584/622mm ETRTO with high radius tires and Expedition/Adventure bikes or just bikes that look way to cool and such

  • nah, just put 26 on it and leave it at that
