  • No hollow part on tiagra ed, only scalloped section.

  • Make sense, it's only on 105 upward that have the hollow part.

Actually @danstuff must have reduced the weight of it considerably enough to rival even the Ultegra chainset.

  • So I dragged my lht out of storage today so here it is, it's been sat for 18months so needs a bit of a strip, clean and rebuild as well as the updates. Excuse the saddle height as just got it out of the back of the car.
    To do:
Dismantle as much as I can be arsed
    Clean
    Cut steerer finally
Sell the Salsa bars, wisecracker spacer and hip flask cage.
Get lowriders or other solution for the front end
    New tyres and bars

  • R460 DB rims and TRP Spyres have arrived. Both have a stupid amount of packaging. Just need the RS4's now for my Foots-cray project.

  • How much of a faff are disc brakes with horizontal dropouts/track end type dropouts/surly style dropouts?
Want to build a fixed commuter with 2 disc brakes and options are limited.

  • Normally horizontal disc tabs have sides so you can move the brake to match the rotor

  • How much of a faff are disc brakes with horizontal dropouts/track end type dropouts/surly style dropouts?

Not much. If you want completely idiot-proof, rockers or sliders which fix the relationship between the axle and the caliper mount are available, but if you're even moderately competent they are a bonus rather than a must-have.

  • Wheels cleaned and BonJons look great on there. Bike largely in pieces now.
Quick question, my chromoplastics are a bit twisted from storage, can I warm them up with a hairdryer or hot water to twist them back again, or just pull them straight with the stays?

  • Have taken delivery of the drillium DSC - very excited to be building a fixed bike again!

Decided to try and rust-proof the downtube
Waxoyl was a poor choice - it gets everywhere :/

  • You can warm them up, but be careful of overdoing it, it surprisingly easy to warp them.

  • GF wants some new bits on her commuter.

She wants a basket on front, with drop bars. It's a single speed so I was thinking a Wald basket with SRAM 500 levers.

But Wald works only with 25.4mm bars.

Are there equiv basket like Wald for 31.8mm bars?

Or should I look for levers that work with 25.4mm bars?

  • I'm sorry to have to say this, but you've got it all wrong :)

Bars are 25.4mm or 31.8mm only at the stem clamp, the rest of the bars are 22.2mm. So as long as you get a Wald basket where the clamps are a bit spaced out, you're clamping on to the 22.2mm part. The same for the SRAM S500 levers.

  • Don't be sorry - that's great news! Takes the difficulty right out of it.

  • Great!

And even the Wald baskets where the clamps are closer together the Wald website says the following: They fit 7/8", 1" and 31.8mm diameter handlebars

  • This is where I was getting my information on the bars - https://www.bricklanebikes.co.uk/wald-1372-medium-basket-black

    "22.2-25.4mm clamps"

  • Quick fit check with new bars and tyres. Feels pretty good but will play around til I get the fit spot on.
Much steerer to chop... it weighs a fuckload even without rack and guards. The seatpost is stupendously long so might cut it down a bit.

  • ahh yeah, that's the only front basket model that's not able to fit on 31.8mm and the clamps are pretty close (my info http://www.waldsports.com/index.cfm/store/front-baskets/).

But you could just use 25.4 bars with SRAM S500 levers :) (or pick another Wald basket)

  • Get a Genesis day one singlespeed

  • great - i'll have a think. Thanks for your help.

  • Finished this one a month ago .
Special thanks to @Si46 for the shifters

  • This is looking pretty good!

If you wanted to try something different at the front end, I've got a Disc Trucker fork that I'm not going to use, so you could have a disc front. It may even have rack mounts - but I'm not sure.

  • Bit left to do but getting there. Looking forward to having the steerer trimmed.
Might have cut the outer a bit short so will maybe sort that out tomorrow.
@tommmmmmm I think I'll hang on to the stock fork for now, low riders are first priority so not fussed about a front rack right now.
Forgot I had JOL gurney straps on this.
Will do better pics when I'm finished with it.
