Ugh, was playing a game on Steam last night and Windows ran out of memory. I've got 32-bit Windows 10 Pro (only recognises 3.5Gb) but my PC can run the 64-bit version (which I gather is a no-cost upgrade) which will see all my 16Gb.
I guess this means tedious fresh install? Sigh.

Yup but it's so worth it. That's a very low amount of ram to be living with.

My mum has a very old tower PC which takes 15 minutes to boot a into Windows 10, what's the best bang for buck PC tower I can grab from PC world over the next few days that will cope with Ancestry Pro and web browsing?

What's the budget? There's always basic dell towers...

Intel i3 or AMD A8 with 8GB memory as a base point and go from there really.

Was actually quicker and easier than I thought. Helps that I don't keep any files on my Windows 10 install as I use OS X nearly all of the time, Steam helps too.
Previously had Geforce Experience installed for my 750ti. Everything's working totally fine with the driver Windows 10 automatically downloaded and installed, is there any point installing it again? It just seems like bloatware really.

My monitor is DVI-I (single link) and my video card VGA and DVI-D (dual link).
I've got adaptors so I can use either.
When I use VGA, maximum resolution is 1280x1024; but with DVI, it's only 1024x768.
Is this to be expected, or do I need to tweak something? I'd have expected DVI to be better than VGA.

@Scilly.Suffolk, Assuming you have Windows? have a look in Control Panel, Display and Adjust Resolution and then Advance Settings. On the Adapter tab there's a List Modes button.
I think you can select a slightly different refresh rate to higher res. -

Good to hear! Yeah, they've really streamlined the whole install process, especially with drivers. Would assume the one Windows installed is fine but the Nvidia software gets you screen recording and some other stuff. Probably unnecessary really.

Yeah that's what I figured. New version of Windows 10 Pro is definitely better. I like the pin instead of password.
Did a @chrisbmx116 and installed it as UEFI so now have a nice slick dual boot with macOS. All good.

Yes, W7.
Thanks, but no dice. I'll stick with VGA.
Just seems odd (to a layman) that DVI>VGA, is "better" than DVI>DVI (albeit two different versions).

Pretty much good and a reasonable price.

agreed it's probably not worth the hassle. There's a way to add to the "list all modes" which is s called something like the "EDID information". From memory it's manually editing the list in the registry, which is a complete pain. The other thing is maybe have a look for a new .inf for your monitor from the manufacturer.

Feels good doesn't it? Did you buy a legit copy of Windows? Maybe I should stop running the trial and get some updates... whats the go to site for legit but cheaper than high street Windows keys?
-
• #3394
I think I'll stick with VGA.
Thanks anyway!

I got this one https://www.scdkey.uk/microsoft-windows-10-pro-oem-cd-key-global_1227-20.html?&site=uk Seems to be working fine at the moment, gone through various Windows updates with no problem

I think the issue is normally that the monitor isn't being identified correctly (that's the EDID information, I spent a while pissing about with this when I was using a HDMI switch).
You can try installing a different monitor driver. In control panel try selecting the display (something like generic monitor) right click -> update driver software -> browse my computer -> pick from a list -> select something like digital flat panel
There is another more convoluted option of capturing the monitor's EDID info and then writing this to registry and .inf file but that was a real ballache.
It all seemed to work fine under Win 10.

BOOM. Done. Cheers for that... any idea if it works on Multiple machines or do I have to buy Multiple keys?

In theory I think it's locked to your hardware (or at least you'll have to re-authenticate by phone if you change it).

Yup. As does Clover, it's exactly like using a real Mac now - everything works perfectly and I've even got a bootcamp style Clover theme. Updated to 10.12.2 last night and it couldn't have been smoother.
I bought Windows 8 Pro four years ago for £24.99 when Microsoft were trying to encourage uptake by discounting it. I think that was a pre-order. That got me a free upgrade to 10 Pro, then it's free to 'upgrade' from 32 bit MS to 64 bit.
Given MS will charge you £189 for 10 Pro and it's £59 on Amazon for OEM I reckon I got a good deal!

Windows 10 > macOS.
