I heard it was from gardez l'eau or something like that, which people shouted when they were emptying their chamber pots out of the window.
I thought it was just a shortening of lavatory, which is of course yet another "wash room" euphemism. I've never really understood the idea that euphemisms are to be avoided anyway. I think their origins are often really interesting.
