  • I've come to the decision that option 1 is the only option.

I toyed with option 2, but for £5k there's nothing RWD and with all the fancy things I have on my MX5 that I want to keep.

My mate reckons 350Z but £5k would get me a stock car or maybe with an exhaust. I'd need to sell absolutely everything from the MX5 to get the money together so no bucket seat, steering wheel, harness, or anything like that in the 350Z, or even decent suspension, ARBs, wheels, tyres etc.

I've had a look on Northloop, PH, and eBay and £5k doesn't really get you any track cars that aren't hot hatches and I like "hanging the back out" too much to go back to FWD.

  • Not the pimp ones specifically, all defenders... my insurance broker told me they were the third most nicked car in the country and no surprises considering you can remove the doors with an allen key from the outside without even fussing with the locks
very easy to strip down and resell, so much so that the insurance on a defender was double that of my G-klasse !

  • More tales of 911 woe https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/build-projects-and-project-cars/daily-driving-a-cheap-porsche-911-996-what-could-p/92344/page10/

Edit: Haha! Just got to the last page and seen that a certain 'Dammit' with a volvo has joined the party.

  • the later models come with such modern wonderments as an 'immo-bilise-or and a 'steer-ing lock'. Just beef up on proprietary security. You're looking at about another 300 quid all in . that gets you a disklock, clutchklaw + vehicle tracker with subscription to a tracking service. There's a massive export market in defenders, which is why they hold their price better than many other cars, as such, they are stolen to order by pro car scrotes whose MO is to pull up alongside your car, load the fucker onto a truck, drive it to a deserted parking lot and leave it there for a week to see if anyone comes to claim it.

Insurance isn't nearly as bad as you'd think.

  • Oh for fucks sake:

  • Volvo boost pipe?

  • Correct, coming up the hill to my place, 1st gear, fairly high revs, pop!

It's all back together now, pipe cleaned and roughed up then clamped tight, but the car won't idle so I've pulled the ECU so it can reset.

  • You're having bad car luck.

Anyone got a recommendation for Subaru 2.5 turbo head gaskets? Thinking about the RCM ones to replace the failed standard items.

  • It's there, just out of shot.

  • If you can't get a lip rolled on the ends of the ali pipe, I'd suggest running a bead of weld around the outside between the end of the pipe and where the jubilee clip goes. Otherwise the chances are it'll happen again. Used to do that with the water pipes on my racer. Never had one let go, unlike many others.

  • Already spoken to Matt about it, he'll run a bead round the end of the pipe when I can get up to the workshop.

My problem is time - or rather the lack of it, I have to have a functional car to get to my parents for Christmas, the Porsche just left on a transporter and now this has blown in (or off, rather).

  • Does anyone know how to fit roof racks to a BMW 320 5DR? They have the closed rack style jobbies. I have the roof racks in the boot but can't figure out how the feck to fit them. And I can't find a YouTube of it either...

  • If it's anything like my 1 series was, you just flip up the covers on the rails, screw in each of the bases and lock in the bars. It was pretty simple.

  • That's the thing. I can't see any covers to flip on the rails. Unless I am being really stupid.

  • I put two rivets in a pipe on my Saaaaab when it used to do that, just for something for the jub clip to rest against, supposed temporary solution that lasted forever.

On the Portia - I concur with @danstuff, sounds like a collapsing or swelling flexi hose.

  • Do you not have these?

    Do you have these instead?

  • Yep, I have the second one

  • My 5 series has the 2nd type - the bars clamp around the lip at the top.

  • Ah. I had the first one.

    Sorry.

  • ah ok thanks @danb I'll have another look in a minute. I assumed it wouldn't work like that as it didn't look like it would have enough grip. Thanks again

    no worries @Soul

  • May need a hand if I can't sort the indicators alone.

    I vote 350Z with a massive wing.

  • Have you got a meter to test?
