  • Watched the 'tandem' trike one last night.

Does sideways frontal area not equal upright frontal area coz that thing seemed at least as wide as a regular tandem would have been tall.

Also, sitting a puddle of your own piss over stopping for loo breaks? Loo breaks where you could also apply extra chamois cream and give your spine a break and take on food/water?

Still an amazing accomplishment and not something I could ever undertake but would have thought some better planning/management could have given them a bigger margin over previous record and made for a more pleasant effort.

  • A more slippery shape I suppose.

Agree that it all seemed a bit haphazard though: spanking it from the off, "to build up a cushion" and fading towards the end, seems like a basic error to me.

As does not being able to count how many wheels you're using...

  • Why they didn't seat one behind the other I don't know, seemed like a basic aero error to me. Could still have had 3 wheels for stability. Me and the missus fancy a go at it because they seemed to make so many errors and waste so much time.

  • Anyone know if their distance is being recognised by...anyone?

The only tandem bicycle record that Guiness have on their website is a Lejog one. There's a table of records on ultracycling.com that has the Rich Fedrigon/Byron Gremely one listed (in 2nd place behind a shorter distance with a note about amount of climbing) but no mention of Guy/Jason. That site mentions names of officials for some of the records it lists (not for fedrigon/gremely) but doesn't - as far as I can see - give details of any sort of official body or organisation that are confirming or ratifying the records.

Wouldn't the Fedrigon/Gremely record still stand as the furthest travelled in 24hours on a tandem bi cycle anyway?

Edit: the WHPVA are showing the Martin/Miles record on their site. The IHPVA don't list a tandem 24hr record at all.

  • As does not being able to count how many wheels you're using...

Not for the first time, I stand corrected: "tandem" refers to the seating arrangement, rather than the number of wheels.

A tandem has the riders seated one behind the other, rather than side-by-side; this arrangement is called a "sociable".

So even though I was wrong, I was right: they have set a record for endurance sociable riding, rather than breaking the tandem record.

  • Guinness are cunts, charge stupid amounts of money to have your record ratified which is why GWRs aren't always the same as records ratified by other governing bodies like the RRA or IHPVA

  • Rourke Bikes are building Guy a replacement for the bike that got damaged by the propeller :)

  • Goodwood Aerodrome tandem attempt definately left room for improvement. Infact all of these attempts appear to be poorly organised. > Shoestring

  • I was thinking to myself "fairing? well that's not the same record" and then "only 565mi fully faired? Wilko did 541mi solo on a normal bike". Obviously he needed me on the team.

I preferred the Pikes Peak ep to be honest.

  • Huh? Guinness don't charge anything to ratify records unless you want speedier processing or you need to pay one of their officials because you can't get one from an existing governing body.

  • Poorly organised? Team Sky chef, fitness assessments Mike Burrows building the bike!

It doesn't really matter - they've broken them all though (well, I disagree with it being a tandem record) and the drama is probably just for TV anyway.

  • Poor buggers couldnt see out of the window due to impending cyclone!?

    Mike gets dremel out

    Etc

  • Been there, done that...

  • We had to smash the window out during the night because it fogged up so much.

  • You made a wind brake? B-)

  • Better a less aero HPV that moves than one that's can't move at all because it's been crashed (again) straight into a wall or something.

  • Just dredging a thread but just watched Guy Martin cross a desert in China. Smashed the record by 19 hours on a Rourke fixie. Fucking legend

  • The 'record' was just some blokes touring it.
I'm pretty sure the Rourke is a singlespeed.
Still, enjoyed the 3-parts. Probably the most I've ever watched about China.

  • Valid points but still thought it was pretty good going and enjoyed watching it. Yup , it was a ss too. I think i put more effort into prepping for the Dunwich Dynamo a couple of years ago than he did crossing a 300mile desert with a kebab dinner. He did have a support crew i suppose.

You've done the big rides but i thought he was looking pretty dresh at the end of it too.

  • When is your attempt @hippy ?

  • at the kebab dinner I mean - 20-30 seconds?

  • When someone pays for me to go to China. I'd crush it. I mean, I've always wanted to ride through a dessert...

  • I'm more quantity than speed. So, current record is one kebab dinner per crossing? I can top that.

  • I think you're donner smash it...
