I can get up a cat 4 climb ok, but I've just not tried anything really challenging.
I did the Chilterns Classic earlier this year and got around; I've lost a couple of kg since then.
Okay, in my experience you can never have a low enough gear, so I'd go for a 27 or 29 lowest cog, assuming your rear mech can handle it. There might be a time when you appreciate having it.
