  • Do you not spin out on even the slightest downhill gradient with that ratio?

I'm spinning out on 54x13 down anything over 2%....

  • Nope, isn't your a singlespeed? The direct drive on the 3 speed SA hubs is the 2nd gear.

  • Yeah I'm singlespeed...... but surely you can't have a more grindy ratio..... I'm confused...

Either you enjoy 150RPM or you love coasting at 20kph....

  • Your Exposure Flare is mounted upside down.

  • That was on purpose, they can be blinding to cyclist behind me.

  • The 3 speed hubs is;

    1st gears - easier than 40/13 (33% lower).
    2nd gears - is 40/13
    3rd gears - harder than 40/13 (33% harder).

The 3rd gears is a little easier than your 54/13 ratio, need to calculate this tho.

Lastly, I'm in civilian clothes, plus I spin than grind.

  • I wear jeans and a T-Shirt, but I am admittedly useless at spinning unless I really force myself.

  • I'm caning it in full lycra and seem to be either spinning or grinding most of the time.

86 miles by Brompton so far this week and I'm loving it. Almost kinda tempted to go for a bigger chainring...

  • That's bloody good going - I wish my commute was a little longer than it's meagre 12km a day!

Tucked in behind a fella on a canyon Aeroad SLX for the full commute this morning and the look on his face when he couldn't shake me was pretty funny.

  • either spinning or grinding most of the time.

You got the 2 speed right? the sprocket on that is 12/16, and is a Shimano spindle.

In theory, you can change the big sprocket to a 15t or 14t.

Officially you can fit a 13t sprocket instead of a 12t to make it less grindy.

  • @Dick, cheers! Yeah always nice to get a tow off someone with some pace, but I generally find I spin out, gotta learn to spin more I suppose...

@edscoble thanks for the gearing explanation. I pretty much find the easier gear too easy, then shift up and find myself grinding for a while. So maybe a bigger ring would help. I won't do anything too rash, see how I get on for a bit.

  • Your option is that when it time to drop your bike in for a free service, you can ask them to fit a new 54t Brompton chainring and chain (need to be longer, I think 102 link).

Shop should fit those as part of the free service.

  • More frivolity:

  • Is that stuff all from SJS?

  • Yup!

I had a basket load of stuff I almost pulled the trigger on from dinokiddo.me until I saw the postage costs and expected delivery times.
SJS has a great selection of stuff, although they're missing a few of the bits I really wanted like the Ti seatpost without pentaclip.

Hopefully the chainring HTFU as I want to get these DA cranks on ASAP!

  • Yeah, damn shame! Couple of telescopic Ti posts on eBay for £250ish, which is a little steep for me...

And some Ti bits on eBay (J&L from Taiwan), but hard to gauge the quality of it. Meh, I'll be fine with the standard setup for now. Although the standard plastic things to hold the frame together look a bit cheap and crap.

  • Yeah it's a little annoying that Brompification is gone - although I have it on good authority that the J&L seatposts are still very good.

I've got a carbon one on the way, although I'm worried it'll quickly turn into a very sharp spikey ass dildo after hitting a few lumps....

  • Makes me think I made the right decision when, last January, I did the Brompification /SJS thing....
The brommie is now 1.5kg more than my Ti road bike, and could still easily lose some more.

  • @TurtleRecall - glad to hear you are getting on well with the Brompton. Saw your post about the grips. Previous to the 2017 models the grips were glued on. I know I spent ages getting the residue of my M-bar to put on the Ergons.

I tried fitting the Thorn bars with an adaptor after seeing @Dom's Brompton mod on here. I found them too curved in for my liking . Which is why I put the Easton Monkey Bar risers on mine, which I loved so far.

Since I am going down to 2 bikes only come January, I think I am going to start planning on pimping my brommie up as well. Want so many of the 2017 bits. The new M-bar looks awesome and I can get rid of the stem adaptor at the same time. I need to unflip my pentaclip, the extended seat post is working out great. Want the new mudguards and rack - providing it can be fitted to an old frame. Won't know until those bits are widely available.

@Dick - those clamps are sweet - all on SJS?

  • The hinge clamp is a good shout, I'm starting to find the original off sided one a bit fiddly to use.

  • Just had to say Jurek Ogórek kiełbasa i snórek

    You snorkel?

  • Yeah and the springs are a nice touch to keep the clips clear of fold/unfold

  • Why didn't Brompton put that on the original one I have no idea, will order them in my next pay day.

I honestly don't think there's a folding bike as good as a Brompton in the grand scheme of thing, I have to deal with Dahon/Tern today (beside their frame cracking all the times and getting them replaced all the time), and it was a ballaches trying to get even the simplest part for it.

Whether Brompton, either we have it in stock, or a quick email to Brompton get it resolved in a couple days.

The Dahon? getting just the chainset took months.
