• I used to work at a place that had a hydraulic press. It had an adjustable steel screw-in foot that was about two inches in diameter, for pressing small work. I overdid it trying to press a shape into a piece of metal and I bent the foot... a short cylinder of solid steel two inches in diameter, bent like a boomerang. I was scared to use it after that.

  • Yeah, they are super scary. The press at work isn't a big one, it's just for die-cutting. Even so, I have buried 500 x 500mm die tools inch deep in the bottom press surface. And once they're in there it's no small job to get them out.

    When I used it on the forks I didn't even turn it on, I just rested the top plate gently on the steerer to clamp it. Reckon if I had tried pressing it I could have crushed the steerer tube!
