I never bothered with wax just popped some frame saver in and lubed up all my stainless bolts

All of these immaculate builds on the forum is doing my head in.
I don't know if to get a Gnarmac, a gravelgrinder, a rando with balloon tyres or what?!
This looks ace already.
Where'd you get Halo rims in black/black?

@spotter thanks, will have to do the same. Have loads of candles but not too many bolts so may go down that route.
@Thrust I have to admit it took me by surprise a few months ago how functional it'd got on here after a brief hiatus from the forum. I'd say the obvious, which one you'd ride more although any of those slightly different bikes sound like a winner. Wheelset came from London Fields Cycles who were great, from placing deposit were ready in about a week.

Unless you are using some kind of jtek or wolf tooth adapter for the rear mech, Shimano road 10 speed shifter won't work with Shimano Mtb 10 speed rear mech (which is where they start to use clutch) never mind sram mech.

10s Shimano road shifters will work with a 9s Shimano mtb derailleur though, even in combination with a 10s cassette

All except newer Tiagra 4700 - changed the pull ratio for that gruppo

@daveaa thanks for that small but important piece of info. I would like to run a Shimano clutch rear derailleur so the bike's prepared for any rough stuff, which should hopefully mean I just need to remove the mudguards and fit some chunkier tyres.
@Heldring I'm going to look into if 10 speed road shifters with 10 speed mtb rear derailleur (Shadow+ clutch) is possible with an adapter, but if not probably go down the route of 10 speed shifter/cassette with 9 speed mtb derailleur.
Think I've roughly nailed the 1x gearing down to 42 x 11-34/36.

or go full sram?

Clutch? Is this bike gonna do some downhill randonneuring©?

Do you want a pair of da7800 shifters?
-
• #65
@dancing james did actually consider this. Lovely group, but think the cable routing (outside of tape) would keep me up at night, even if there's less resistance.

It'd make getting into the bag a pain in the tits too.

Good point.

No real update apart from 11-34t cassette (Shimano XT CS-M771-10), headset spacers, 5800 BB, and bartape arrived. Gilles berthoud guards and Nitto M18 apartently en route but may need chasing as not heard from the sellers.

What about swept back/porteurish bars with 11 speed XT group/discs/11-42 cassette...

Wot no dynamo?

Needs knurled spacers.

@TM seeing that Kumo in the functional thread the thought did cross my mind, but as much as I loved my Walvale portuer it's got to be drops for long days in the saddle personally. Find the wrists can start to hurt without having multiple hand positions.
@Skülly U WOT M9? A SON would be lovely, but realistically don't ride enough in the dark to warrant the expense/weight of a dynamo. Personally I like the simplicity of 'normal' lighting where you can quickly take it off. Will be interested to see if this build changes that!
@spotter any specific reason sir?

I was touring in France with bars like tm suggested. It was great, my back had zero problems unlike with drops previously. Just need some ergo grips or the like to support your hands and wrists.
Re: knurled spacers, not sure I just fancy they'd look good. -

for maximum "constructeur" points I reckon.
Constructeur bikes had/have all kinds of crazy custom made detailing like for instance knurled spacers.
Ritchey Comp Evomax bars fitted and very impressed, looking forward to a little bit down the line when I'm ready to wrap them in Newbaum's. Also some bolts turned up for the various threaded holes on the frame - I take it these need bolts/candle wax to protect the inside from corrosion?
