  • Read through this, http://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/electriccooker.htm

Don't let Schick see it though.

  • Awesome. further googling has informed me that it isn't illegal so I can do it myself. phew.

  • It's not illegal for you to do it as long as you can ensure the installation satisfies regulation, you test the installation and you work according to the health and safety regulations.

If all you need is a 13amp connection then you should be fine to do that, if you are replacing an existing 13amp cooker then you can consider pinching the lead/plug from it. It's not like you're adding a new circuit.

** Was typing at the same time, glad you got to the right conclusion anyway.

  • Moving electric sockets. Is this something I can do myself (legally speaking) or do I need to get a sparky in? What about termination (not sure if right word) of a socket?

I've a couple of double sockets in an existing skirting board that are gonna end up buried in a stud wall if I don't do something.

  • I'm pretty sure it's fine if you're just adjusting stuff that's already been done. I just changed a couple of sockets yesterday - took <10 mins including repainting the wall where someone had pretty much glued the faceplate to the wall with emulsion.

  • Legally you can move the sockets yourself but you need a qualified electrician to certify the work has been carried out correctly. Is this the stud wall for sound proofing? I thought you were going to contact me about that could be a total waste of money if you do not get the detailing right

  • Cheers, good to know. I have an electrician lined up so will approach him for a quote.

Yup it's the same wall - have now sent a pm :)

  • So the rain noise from my new plastic roof is still waking me up. Existing french doors on the bedroom leading on to that area don't help. Flimsy and not particularly pretty.

Is this a terrible idea? £350 UPVC external french doors from wickes or similar... get glazing company across the road to knock me up a 400mm or so fanlight glazed panel. Fit myself. quieter, warmer bedroom for £under £500.

  • Need a plumber to fit 6 radiators for me in Leyton - pipework is all in place. Any reccos?

  • Doing works to my own house and am currently installing a kitchen extractor hood to an island. The ceiling is low(ish) and I am keen to get the hood as high as possible to avoid headbutting it every time I am using the hob. The hood has the option to be installed as re-circulating or ducted and we have ducted it directly to the outside.

Am I correct in thinking that the vents circled below are for the re-circulating option and that with the hood ducted to the outside we can raise the hood as high as the outer sleeve will allow (453 + 46mm down from the ceiling). I know installing higher that the recommended height might not make the hood as efficient as it could be but it really is at prime head butting height. I have phoned Neff but they are as unhelpful as you would expect.

  • I did although ducting out wasn't the easiest (island unit/concrete floor) and they're not great with gas hobs

  • Bit late but, personally after spending days and days and days, trying to sand and make good a bannister, which in the end I just had to repaint to hide the mess and it looked worse, I would either pay someone to do it or replace.

That style might be slightly easier, but will still be a massive ball ache

  • Re-painting rads: Good rub down with white spirit then paint with Hammerite? Amirite?

  • Strip them back to bare metal. Prime. Paint.

Are they 'cool' radiators or the usual ones?

  • Gawd, really? I thought you could just apply another layer of paint..

They're old school steel panel radiators

    Thanks!

  • Bed update...

LEDs have been fixed and synced with my alarm clock. Ash arrived yesterday so I've got to fix it to the edges and varnish then it's done. New carpet down too.

  • Bongo sound track comes out from speakers underneath right?

  • Only when the mirror ball is on.

  • Looks sweet. Good work.

I'm currently making a bed! (well, designing it). I did think about doing a floater similar kind of thing to yours. I think I'm going with a pretty minimal skinny tubed Aluminium box section framed design that I'll polish up as best I can. I'm going to use work facilities and do something with lazer cut coloured acrylic sheet in the headboard. Might turn out nice might turn out shite. It'll be good fun to make though. Going to try and go for no external visible fixings.

  • Doesn't anything sit behind those vents? And you're going to remove or bury into the ceiling?

It don't know why that wouldn't work, seeing as they're essentially superficial to your uses.

  • The Lewisham Screw Fix has opened in the last week or so and is doing 10% off everything for the first few days in. Get on down.

  • OOOOoooo

    Thats cool...

Are those the wifi LED strips? Can it be manually controlled? Does it do red? (Not pornstar, its if you go to the bathroom at night, its less likely to stimulate you wake up response.)

  • Yes to all three questions.

  • @EstelleGetty that looks like my seimens extractor. I think you're correct those vents are for re-circulation but if you're venting it out they server no function. The outgoing air would come straight from the round outlet on top of the fan unit to a flexible extenstion, which is connected to you ducting.
I wonder if you could turn the stainless steel section with air vents upside down so that they end up being hidden inside the lower section?
