Android phones, apps and tablets

  • What are the good camera phones nowadays? My partner wants to upgrade and that is the main reason. Not the high end price range though if possible (up to £150 ish) so it wouldn't matter if it's an older model as long as the camera was good.

  • The rest of QLD is a few generations behind so no reason to keep an up to date phone. At least guitars have not really evolved ;)

But yeah, paying being first tax is poo. Too many pretty surfboards to buy....

  • Right - no doubt first of many questions...

Just got my 5x. It's bloody enormous, but will probably get used to it.

Now I did have HTC's Blinkfeed previously - what is a good widget for social media aggregation? And is there one that does news n stuff as well?

  • N5x currently shitting itself and rebooting every few minutes, bought through eGlobal so Google won't touch it, obvs... Fuckstix!

  • Tried everything but a factory reset, all failed... Factory reset seems to be doing the business so far, crisis (hopefully) averted...

  • ^^^ I guess that's a no then.

In other news - very pleased to have calling over wifi given the shit reception at home. And enjoying asking google to do things without touching the phone...simple things.

  • What had you recently updated / installed / flashed?

  • Did it again last night... I uninstalled a bunch of stuff I don't really need including a new storm warning app called Storm (because Queensland super cells), that seems to have done the trick... All good for now...

  • So I am one of the last tablet hold outs, which is surprising given that I thought the original Nexus 7 was shit. I love my N7 2013 to bits, and to bits it's going. The USB socket has finally failed. I've been kinda looking around for a new tablet for a while, but was holding off hoping Google would announce a new one. They didn't.

So Asus ZenPad 3S 10 is out now, it looks great, a bit bigger than I really wanted. Any thoughts on it ? My concerns are MediaTek cpu devices are not normally hacked by XDA to run clean roms, so I could be stuck with Asus bloatware. I'd love Android 7, but my N7 still runs 6 so I don't overly care.

  • Maybe I just go MS ? I refuse to do Apple, I really hate iOS.

Oh fuck no, those surface devices look great but I want to spend ~$300 not $800

  • Save up and get the Pixel Tablet? They do look swish.

  • trying to flash my N4 with a custom Rom, successfully unlocked bootloader and flashed TWRP, now I can't get the phone to show up on my PC in order to load SuperSU. It shows up as a device, but not a drive. I'm guessing this is an issue with USB drivers but when I tried manually loading these drivers it has failed (on windows 7). Any ideas?

edit: and it won't boot normally now either...

  • Heyyyyyy
My chinaPhone is full of adverts, I think these are classed as airpushed ones, they just pop up annoyingly over the top of everything.
I've tried downloading a couple of 'airpush detector' apps, and some virus etc scanners but nothing finds anything.
what shall i do now? if i click on them accidently, 50% of the time I am taken go to google play to download a legit-looking app, and 50% I am blocked from downloading an app from a non-secure site (this is an option turned on from my phone).

  • Root it and install a custom ROM seems the obvious. I'd be a little wary of using it if it's so clearly a dubious ROM.

  • I think this might be the only way forward. i rooted a ZTE Blade a few years ago, I guess it should be pretty easy to do now.

  • What chinaphone do you have? It may have an unofficial ROM full of crapware - find out what it is and get a proper version of the ROM from the vendor (or alternatively, something like Cyanogenmod if it exists for your phone).

  • Be aware that tools used to root phones, particularly one-click ones, will install their own spyware,

  • Can I do it with a mac or do I need a PC?
    its one of these:

is there a basic ROM that'll work with everything?

  • Ok, I think I had this wrong. Can anyone confirm... I have to flash the new radio and ROM images via ADB command line right?

Still can't remember when and how I gain root access, but that's no so important at the moment.

  • Normally you do that kinda of thing through fastboot (accessed either through a hardware key combo on boot or through 'adb reboot fastboot' while booted. Then you boot into your recovery and flash your SuperSU binary (for root) and GApps (for play store etc). Then you boot as normal and immediately turn on ADB for when you break it again...

  • The other option would be just to root it and use something like Titanium backup to remove anything that looks suspicious. I'd just opt for a new ROM if there is a stable one out there though.

  • I think I used ADB to install TWRP recovery onto my phone, then installed SuperSU binary from recovery.

That's what I thought, but I've not put SuperSU on the phone before I got started. Now I can't see the phone when I get it connected to my PC (save as a misc device, as above) which means I can't get it across. Is there another way of moving it to the phone using ADB?

  • You can use the push command http://www.androidauthority.com/android-customization-transfer-files-adb-push-adb-pull-601015/

Or just restart the phone, and transfer it using google drive or something then boot back to recovery and install supersu.

  • Nice one thought so. I would just do the latter, but since flashing TWRP it will no longer boot into Android, or factory reset. I will try just flashing the new ROM tonight, otherwise I fear it may be toast.
