  • What sort of mileage could you expect from the compass tyres? High end, race tyre sort of distance or a bit longer than that? Thinking of the snoqualmie pass but would want them to last until spring

  • mine usually last a while when it come to 38+mm, hell I even use them for commuting.

  • That's good to hear, might be able to justify a pair then

  • If you choose high volume tyres, it seems that they last longer than expected.
I have a pair of Rattrap pass EL (26 inch, 54mm), I have ridden around 4500 km on them (including loaded touring), and the central ridges (?) have just began to fade.

  • Great, thanks!

  • Compass SQ pass ordered. Anyone want an unused pair of 700x35c Kojaks? £30 dorrah?

  • If you choose high volume tyres, it seems that they last longer than expected.

That my experiences too, I managed a little over 10,000km with the old Grand Bois Hetres which were made in the same factory.

  • Incase anyone was wondering, a 23 GP4000sii measures up nearly 26mm on a 21mm internal rim. Not sure I'd ever want to actually ride it like this but interesting to see what it looks like (i need to get out more)

  • Anyone got any cheap cross tyres they want rid of? 32 or 35mm. Cheers

  • Massively OT but I've just had the tyres on my car done, sat in the waiting room reading tyre industry magazines. Didn't know you could get your Conti car tyres in black chilli compound as well.
They turned my whole car around quicker than Scoble can do a single Rando..
Splashed out on some large volume Pirellis to give my Polo that on-trend gravel grinder look. Nearly went for winter Contis but I live in london and do fuck all miles so would have been completely pointless. Tread looked boss tho.
Also, how come car tyres are comparable/cheaper than 700c ones?

  • Got a pair of Michelin Mud 2s you can have for £30 the pair. Still have almost all their moulding hairs.

  • Interesting- look like the my night be a little hardcore for my needs, which is boshing some bridlepaths at weekends. Any good on road to get to the paths? Also are these 30mm? Totally new to the idea of off road!

  • Yep, 30mm, but they come up a little larger. The go-to CX race clincher AFAIK, obviously not ideal on road but they'd get you there.

  • Personally I'd get something a bit more robust than Michelin Mud for 'boshing some bridlepaths'. They are a great tyre, but there are others, like Schwalbe, Continental or Vittoria that would be more resistant to sidewall damage (which is the Mud's achilles heel).

  • Schwalbe CX comp can be had for £11 on tredz - sounds too good to be true. Is it?

  • tredz - sounds too good to be true

Don't let me put you off, but Tredz have form for being Cuntz...

  • Just seen this on facebook:
    http://www.boredpanda.com/airless-flat-free-tire-bike-nexo/

apparently they have a range of no-inner-tube, puntureless tyres.
    obviously i'm sceptical.

    discuss.

  • Probably really heavy. Probably ride like shit. Probably really difficult to install.

Solid tyres have been done before, they didnt take off

  • I was chatting to my local lbs the other day about someone who'd bought a solid set of tyres, installed them and rode them for one 100 mile ride. Broke his arse and his spine, obviously, and them when he tried to get them off the rims he couldn't. They had to be cut off.

  • I used to use Vittoria Rubino Pro a few year ago for pretty-much all year use. Not really sure why I stopped, but anyway - Does anyone use the new "Graphene®™" versions?

  • Don't.
I tried a 25 mm tire (Panaracer Race A, slightly on the large side) on a 23mm inner-width rim. The profile was beautifully u-shaped, the ride quality was great, until I took a corner a bit too fast ; before I knew it, I was on the ground - when you really get on the angle, you're slightly on the carcass, not on the thread, and lose grip quickly.

  • Thing is, they're not solid.

I as sceptical as the next man, when someone claims to have "reinvented the wheel", but to a layman like me they don't appear to be so obviously flawed as solid tyres.

No doubt I'll get shot down shortly.

  • I waiting for a video of them going through a puddle, or some mud.

  • Yep, I have the 28c graphene standard type one on the rear. Bought a pair but my front Schwalbe One is doing better than the rear did. Ridden the Vittoria for about 800 miles and had one puncture, in the wet. Rear tyre, possibly underinflated and definitely just after having filtered on that crappy lane divider hash marked bit full of stones and broken glass up the hill from Camden towards Holloway Road.

  • Also have no option of varying pressure based on your weight, luggage and terrain. If everyone used solid tyres, who would Scoble tell to drop their pressure?
