"Rare" Peugeot Track

Posted on
  • This is my first ever project so any advice, guidance and opinion are very welcome.

Managed to snatch this off eBay, it's got loads of issues but it was begging to be rescued.

Apparently it was an ex rental bike from Manchester velodrome, I've looked everywhere in the web and I can't find anything.

    Positives:
Possibly a rare Peugeot track frame
    Reynolds 531c
Got the original forks ( not pictured )
Perfect size for me and great geometry

    Negatives:
    Stuck seatpost
    Stuck bottom bracket
    Horrible powder coat job
A small ding on the top tube
    Stem seized to chrome forks

Came with with 165mm dura ace 7600 njs cranks with a zen 42 tooth chain ring.

What do you guys think I should stay with?

Zen Messenger surely? Not quite the same as Zen.

How do you know it's a Peugeot? Frame will probably benefit quite a bit from a nice paintjob indeed. Fast back seat cluster looks awesome!

  • I've called Manchester velodrome and it kind of checks out, they had peugeot bikes for a while. According to the person I spoke to, they still have a few hanging around.

I found a single picture for a supposedly same bike, albeit in a slightly smaller size. The forks I've got are exactly the same.

    You're right, it's a zen messenger.

  • Get it repainted with sick fadez

    Throw away everything else

  • Keep (return to) paint in original colour (whatever that may be) build with period correct parts.
Don't get Medieval on the seatpost - get some WD 40 in there for as long as possible while you contemplate the other removal methods (turn upside down and squirt up thru BB shell)

  • Stuck aluminium insert part name here in steel frame:

    4 viable options:

    1. creeping oil & lots of patience. Then pipe wrench to twist and remove .... or ....
    2. Vice. Stick post in a big fucking vice and use the frame as a lever to twist post and break the interface between alu post and steel frame.
    3. Melty melty. Caustic soda that fucking stuck fuck. Be careful please. Wear goggles and don't Tyler Durden yourself.
    4. Medieval. For those with good work skills. Do not attempt if you have dicks for fingers. Cut off post or stem leaving an inch above the insertion. Insert a loose hacksaw blade into the inside of post and carefully saw outward making sure the cut stays even and you're not ruining your frame. Once cut, either pipe wrench and out or if still stuck. Use big fucking vice to crush weakened post and remove.

Or a mixture of all of the above.

  • According to the person I spoke to, they still have a few hanging around.

I've only seen one there, it is actually hanging up on the wall. I'll get a pic tomorrow for you if I remember. Nudge me if pic needed and I forget.

  • I've left it soak with wd40 for a few days, still not budging. I'm not in a terrible hurry so I'm going to let it soak a bit more.

Spoke to Mario Vaz about getting the frame sorted there, he sounds like a top chap and probably the best I know. I really don't want it powder coated. Apparently Mario knows/ works with a frame builder that can get the seatpost and bottom bracket out for not a lot of money, I'll consider that if it gives me a lot of hassle.

I'm still indecisive about the colour scheme

I'm torn between original @Si46, it would be great if you could sort out a picture @rhb
Sick fades is am optoion also @timbre

I'm also considering something a bit more classic Peugeot, similar to this:

  • Love me a Peugeot (but I am biased) for me I would go with the middle ones decals but frame in white!

  • Heard good things about http://www.theseatpostman.com/

  • I am currently using method 4 on a frame after trying most of the above. However, i have taken off most the post above the seat tube. It's time consuming but seems to be working bit by bit.

  • Make sure you've got enough post to get a grip on ....

  • Top of post came off when clamping it in the vice. seat post is very brittle so, removing it piece by piece. It seems silly but is literally the only way possible.

  • There is only one paint choice:

here it is in track form:

  • Will look rad, love the Peugeot track frames!

  • Spoke to Mario Vaz about getting the frame sorted there, he sounds like a top chap and probably the best I know. I really don't want it powder coated. Apparently Mario knows/ works with a frame builder that can get the seatpost and bottom bracket out for not a lot of money, I'll consider that if it gives me a lot of hassle.

The chap in question is his brother Winston Vaz, who works in the same premises and is a fantastic frame builder and a great guy. Don't bother with the methods above and get him to remove the post and BB. This way he can also assess if the frame is sound, prior to paint work. (And if you are bothered, fill that dent also)
Removal of seized stuff seems to be £20 on his website, that frame definitely worth it I'd say...

  • No fadez, simple blocks.

  • The lighting is so poor and the bike so high up as to make the picture pretty poor, sorry.

  • Here's some info about the bikes. Apparently they were all shipped to La Paz after here.

  • Just realised I've never seen a steel Peugeot track with fastbacks .. the Racelines (alu?) had them?

    What model/year is it?

edit: green and yellow thing above is ... but year?

  • The pink and purple one is gorgeous, as is the dark silver.

    Lots of good options.

  • I really don't know what to do colour wise, I thought I was going to do just a single really see colour and decals and leave it, then @alibi threw a spanner in the works, that track Peugeot really looks nice.

@rhb thanks a lot for the pics, I've been looking everywhere and I can't find any other

I'm trying to ding the time to go and see Mario to sort out the seatpost and bottom bracket. He's going to sprayed as well, once I make my mind up on the colour/colours.

@veLLo as soon as I spoke to Mario there was no other choice, I'm going to leave it all with him

@Batt I have no idea. They used them from 96 so maybe 95-96

  • Gunmetal grey! White decals! Leather track (murder) gloves!

  • The forks are probably my favourite bit of the frame.

This is my 1st ever track build, I haven't built or have been riding since a cheapo carbolite conversion a few years back.

I really don't know what are period correct parts. I can only think of dura ace 7600. Or campagnolo pista, where does that leave me with the other components (seatpost, stem and handlebars)?

Hope you guys can share some knowledge with the rookie.

  • If period correct parts doesn't bother you then don't do it.

7600 cranks are great. Get what you think will suit and will look good together / look through pedalroom and see what other people have done if your feeling uninspired maybe?
