  • I just want MOAR POWER.
    RX 480 please.

  • Nice... 🤣

  • Damn, was waiting for these and really considering finally buying an Apple device.

    But... no ESC key!

How, how will that work with VIM? Or Emacs? Or... just anything?

Will I have to rebind CAPS LOCK as ESC and wipe out muscle memory of 20 years?

I'll wait a couple of days for the full details to arrive and the initial feedback... but I fear I may end up with a Dell and continue to run Linux.

  • Ive had esc bound to caps lock for years, no idea why others havent tbh, as a dev its way nicer

  • Muscle memory.

My biggest gripe with Apple, and the single reason I've not had an Apple computer, is that I can't get used to the cut and paste keys having moved to the strange Swedish topo key.

Honestly, as a coder cut and paste is what defines a good keyboard ;)

  • The point of it is that the OLED panel will adjust to whichever program you're in. Most of the time, the ESC key will be present in the top left, just like normal!

I'm assuming they'll also build in some sort of customisation though, if they don't, it won't be a week before someone else has. Then you can have the entire top line be an ESC key if you want :)

  • ^ bet it'll work sweet on osx, question is how it'll translate to windowz on bootcamp

    (not that I care)

  • I know what the point is.

But this is like saying the point of Force Touch is to give you a contextual menu based on the application... just how many applications have really made this feature shine?

The Macbook isn't the first to replace the F5 with dynamic keys/displays, there are Toshiba's from 2003 that did it, and recently the Lenovo X1 Carbon. The issue has never been the implementation, but the support from software.

I know the argument, "this is Apple, software will support it", but every piece of software? No, not at all. Because a lot of things installed for devs from Homebrew will be written for Linux and have no idea of the bar.

Perhaps Apple will have sane defaults... ESC, F-keys, etc. But this is why I said I will wait a few days for actual information to be released and initial reviews to come in.

  • I wouldn't dismiss it at this point – there will probably be a setting for having the traditional F-row permanently. The escape key is too important to too many users to just drop it flat out.

I'm guessing if there's a piece of software that doesn't support it, it'll just default to traditional F-row.

  • This worries me (bootcamp).

  • All fair points but I think the true test will be user customisation.

If you're able to customise actions based on your active program, without requiring the developer to have coded in support, the possibilities are endless.

I can see, in 12 months time, an app store specifically for it....

  • They'll just push the usual update to Bootcamp to add support.
It might actually be better in Windows... It could display the whole tool bar.

  • Remap...

  • I'm still bitter about back space.

  • You should try setting up a hardware pedal and bind that to ESC. Once you've got a clutch to control your editor you won't go back.

  • Next stop:

  • I have been using a mac now full time for almost 4 months now and have come to the conclusion that the menu bar fixed to the top of the screen instead of the window a la Windows is out of date and needs to change.

Seriously we have huge screens now I don't want a window I have open say at the bottom right of the screen and half the functionality is on the opposite side of the screen for no discernable reason.

I have an ultrawide monitor here and it's infuriating. It's like the only keep it because they want to maintain distinction from other OSes rather than any practical applicaton.

It's like all those apple fanboys who say macs are easy to use, and they say oh you just need to memorise all these obscure keyboard shortcuts.

    Bah humbug.

  • Yeah that makes sense actually..
I sometimes dream of designing a whole new OS, prob harder than it sounds... and hardware to match...

  • Just got my backup sorted.

    Teehehehe

  • Using the menu bar >>>>>>>>

  • That actually look amazing, I have always imaging being able to use the iMac screen as a touch screen but that taking it to another level.

  • Yeah, looks amazing. Not sure how an iMac could match that?
