Front rack suggestions

  • I realise its far from ideal. Truth be told those hubs aren't made with enough thread for that. The nut is only 2/3rd tightened down as is (remember the thread is only in the hexagonal bit, not the integrated washer).

If the rest of the mount was fine I'd probably ride it. Otherwise not sure I'd risk it. Its most likely fine but I'd hate to be the one to find out if its not.

Out of interest do these forks have lawyer tabs or have they been filed down?

  • Awesome suggestion.

  • Anybody knows what this teddy bear plate is called or where to get 1? I think this will solve my pelago plates pointing forward problem. This rack on this bike is pass & stow and it's far too expansive to buy... shame coz it's real nice...

  • if i'm reading this conversation correctly - Fitzrovia cycles might have some.

  • Minoura make them, they come with gamoh porteur rack, but come in 2 axle sizes.

    I suggested these up thread.

  • I will have to look for some fast just had some 35 tryes put on the bike and it's not enough space for the rack, rack's off until I can get hold of some teddy bears...

  • I'm in the market for a pizza style front rack and have seen some nice ones in the pages of this conversation. However all that attach at the crown brake bolt seem to attach to the front of the fork crown. My Pompino fork is only drilled at the rear (and I have no desire to drill the front). Is it possible to mount to the rack from the brake hole on the rear of the fork crown?

Also, do the racks mounting at the fork axle permit tight clamping of the wheel in the dropouts as the knurled washer is no longer adjacent to the dropout?

Finally, am I the only person who thinks the CETMA style racks that attach at the handlebars and leave metal bits protruding upwards look lethal?

  • Just fitted this Surly front rack on my Long Haul Trucker. It's strong but not very light, made of alloy so that it will be easily weld-able in the event that it breaks while crossing the Irrawaddy and has to be repaired by a local blacksmith (don't think that's going to happen to me).

Comes in silver as well. Haven't tested it under load yet. It allows you to hang your panniers high or low and has a shelf as well

  • Is alloy easily welded? I thought steel was best for that.

  • @cranky I think it's a typo, don't they only make it in cromo?

  • Yup, sorry, my bad, it's CroMoly

  • So a steel would be an "alloy" unless you're referring to aluminium (also an alloy)

    #inb4tester

  • Sorry, being a chemist I should have realised that. All the engineers at work refer to aluminums as alloy and everything else as steel, brass etc even though they're alloys as well.

  • To further confuse things the rack is made of cro-moly...

  • I'm looking to fit a front rack to my commuter. Something like this Atran Velo Cargo Mini. The thing is I have quick release wheels, not a solid axle. Will I die? My forks have lowrider mounts so I'd be open to alternatives at a similar price but I can't find anything that isn't mad ££££.

  • @jimmy_james I've got one of those racks and it mounts directly onto the axle and you also have to force it a little on the axle so I don't think it'd be best/possible to mount onto quick release wheels

  • Thanks for the info. I had a feeling that might be the case.

  • i have one of these without the mid fork eyelets and it is surprisingly solid

  • Do racks, or anything else for that matter, that attach at the cantilever bosses affect in anyway the function of the brake. Obviously the brakes must still function, but what about the feel at the lever?

  • If set up correctly they won't. I've had 3 racks like this on 3 different bikes. All ridden with and without racks. No noticable difference in braking with or without.

  • Will pizza rack fit on straggler disc for without fucking around?

  • yes (I think) @mk1mark 's straggler has (had?) it.
