  • That looks pretty decent. What's the performance like? Any slippage / readjusting need doing?

  • I only used it a handful of times, I think I added a brake booster to stop the bosses turning and in the process produced the worlds ugliest front brake. It was a bit fiddling to set up but performance was good and I didn't have any problems/catastrophic failures whilst using it.

  • That's genius, I love having a passenger there's just nowhere to put them!

  • A bit naughty seeing as it's my 1959 Carlton Super Python but wanted to use dual pivots with some 700C wheels, so...
Works amazingly well even under very hard braking from speed and with my 100kg on board. looks a dogs dinner mind

  • Wo.. looks kinda scary. Im surprised it didnt rip off or bend under testing. Have you tried long reach dual pivots?

But if that bracket is the solution your going with, at least trim the excess metal :)

  • It's from an old style reflector, the metal is pretty chunky @3.5mm, the first time it slipped around but tightening it right up on the half moon washers did the trick. I actually have an extra long drop but wanted to see if this would work and do a long term test including fitting a camera to record to see if there is any/much flex under braking. Chopping it will require some heftier cutting tools than I posess, I'm not too fussed as it's under my arse ;) If the same bracket was curved around in a tight U that would be perfect to support it from both sides then no flex (of any note) could possibly occur.

I have some lovely lightweight 27" hookless clinchers that I have had on it but wider 27s don't sit on the bead as well as I'd like them to and these old stock 32mm Vredstein's have been kicking around and giving me evil looks and they are superb so worth the bodge :o)

It's had 4 different builds in the 10+ years I've owned it including 8 speed with Dura Ace STIs so I'm not unaccustomed to farting about with it!

  • My neighbour has been riding to work and back for years on a similar set up. Never had any issues, even on the massive hill he has to go down on the way home. I think his loops over the top of the bridge and back down the other side, with the bolt going through the metal bit twice, if that's makes sense. Or maybe it's just 2 bits of metal.

  • Yeah, i've seen that, basically what I described above, because the support is from both sides it shouldn't budge any. The other alternates are brake shoes with a drop in them, not that expensive tbh and you can get really silly expensive gadgets like below but why buy new when a free bodge works just as well :D

This is what you described or very similar

  • Yeah that's about it. I'm not sure I'd be happy with it personally, but if I'm honest I reckon that's more to do with aesthetics :-)

I've seen those drop bolts for what seems like a lot of cash. Looks like it would be a really easy thing to fabricate with the right tools.

  • One step closer to rack

  • Alloy? How much?

  • Raw aluminium I believe , and it came to £27 something from b&q but 3rd piece in is about 2m in length. I'm sure it could be bought for cheaper elsewhere.

  • That's not bad. Anything more to buy? Can you crack on with it?

  • Should have plenty of bolts etc in my dad's shed so nothing more to buy. Got lots of college work to do but will probably start cutting to length during this week .

  • Next time you need metal, Metal Supermarkets in Acton will cut stuff like that to length if you're west side of the London. Otherwise go on eBay - both options will be cheaper than B&Q. Anything from small bits of tube for spacers, box section, extrusions and solid blocks :)

  • Not in London but eBay is a good shout. Thank you

  • By the way there is a DIY bike workshop near the Elephant and Castle in south London. https://56abikespace.wordpress.com It has got a wide range of tools and parts and usually an experienced bike mechanic on hand to assist you with repairs.

  • Ah amazing. Going to see if they need volunteers. LBK is great but other side of town for me.

  • Another fender/ziptie bodge

  • Two dirt drop MTB shift lever hacks to the max here.
