  • Yeah, try via the old modem, but make sure the old modem is power cycled and left off for at least 1 minute before being turned back on.

This is the single thing issue that trips me up every time I've replaced a modem. I vowed not to forget it in future.

  • Ill give it ago tonight. Cheers BossMan

  • And... IM BACK!!!

Fucking painful but sorted it out! Holy crap sticks is it fast compared to what it was before!!

    74mbps/d and 18.84/u

    Thanks again BossMan!!

  • That was the turn off and leave off for a little while trick?

  • fortunately I had turned it off in the morning so probably but i also had to do that many times... It may be fast now, but the connecting and signing in kept bombing out.

    But ultimately, probably yes.

  • Grrr...

Why is Win 7 stuck at 99% when installing Win 10?

  • 'Older or slower hardware'!

It has a Gen 3 i7-3770 CPU in it!

  • This worked for me.

Before using the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant, perform these steps:

set Windows 7 updates to "Never install updates".
Stop the update service by right clicking on the command prompt, and choose "Run as administrator".

    Type

    NET STOP WUAUSERV

It should say: "Windows update service is stopping....windows update service is stopped." Windows update service is stopping

After completing the above steps, start the Windows 10 Upgrade assistant, and it should complete.

  • ^ Didn't work unfortunately.

I'm going to do a fresh install of Win 7 as it won't update either. Then try Win 10 after Win 7 is brought back up to date.

  • If you're doing a fresh install then why not just a fresh install of Win 10?

My laptop installed Win10 fine but only as a fresh install. Came up with a weird error attempting to update from Win 7.

  • Fuck w10 updates... killed my Bootcamp partition twice! Took near a week to fix up proper... I've since turned them off.

  • after emma's w10 laptop continually shit the bed and refused to maintain a network connection for longer than 2 minutes at a time I downgraded it to win 7 last week and now it works perfectly.

however, windows update is fucked for legacy installs good and proper. you have to install specific updates manually to update windows update (so you can update while you update) or else the fucking thing will sit there pretending to search for new updates indefinitely.

one you fix that shit-show there's now a rollup of all windows updates for win 7 up to about the start of this year which only appears if you log in to win update manually on the website using IE.

once that's done there's still about 8 hours worth of install/reboot/wait/install/reboot/wait shenanigans to go through until it's up to date.

coupled with the fact you can't create a bootable usb key for win 7 on windows 10 because of the way the bios boots having changed (something to do with eufi or some bollocks) so i had to create a bootable usb windows installer key on my mac using bootcamp (but not the latest version on sierra as that option's been removed now, el capitan only plz which luckily was still on my mac mini server) the whole process took me nearly 36 hours of effort including watching the updates install.

the only saving grace was I got to be supremely petty and throw it back in emma's face after she'd made the biggest of deals out of giving me a lift to essex with my camping gear for a 24 hour race as it was going to take up 3 hours of her day on both saturday AND sunday.

  • I think the function is still there in Sierra. I recently had a nightmare with it but created an installer on USB on it. I think it might be hardware specific newer Macs don't need/create a USB where as my older 2013 does...

  • If you're doing a fresh install then why not just a fresh install of Win 10?

Because I'm a cheapskate getting the Free Win 10 install via the Assitive Technology route.

I might of managed to get a HP i7 for a silly price of £150 but damned if I'm paying for a Win 10 licence! ;)

  • There is something wrong with the current Win 7 build anyway. It sticks at 60% when trying to download Plex Server as well.

Downloaded KODI without a problem though. Go figure...

  • Ohh...

Just went to put a DVD in the drive to download the Win 7 ISO and I have a message that an update is ready...

Will I get Win 10? Will Penelope Pitstop escape Dick Dastardly?

    Stay tuned dear readers...

  • 207 updates...

    At least it's progress.

  • Fuck w10 updates... killed my Bootcamp partition twice! Took near a week to fix up proper... I've since turned them off.

    Yeah.

    But.

    Apple

  • Yeah.

    But.

It was Windows that killed it.

  • Does Microsoft make Bootcamp?

  • Is it necessary to update to get that though. I was going for the update from w7 but installed w10 direct.

Probably depends on your windows key I guess

  • Finally.

I'm not sure what the person I bought the PC off did to it but...

I eventually got Win 7 to do a full upgrade. freezing77's advice managed to kickstart Win 7 to finish a final upgrade even if it was geared for Win 10.

Once Win 7 went through all it's upgrade paths the Win 10 upgrade completed in 15 minutes.

Mind you, I may well have the Anniversary upgrade to deal with...

  • So now (hopefully) I have a very powerful Plex Server using a 6TB Proliant Microserver that will allow me to watch movies on a TV.

I might of overdone it a little bit.

  • Done.
