Earphones / Headphones: Where to try, what to buy?

  • Any suggestions on wireless earphones and separate wireless mp3 player? (i don't want to carry my phone into the gym with me as i will drop a heavy weight on it)

I have bought cheap ones from amazon and it drops literally when in my top pocket of my coat or if i move... ( i only bought them to test the idea out but with this reception, its not worth the test)

  • Bragi dash?

Bluetooth earphones with built in music storage...

  • Decided to return the Plantronics BackBeat Sense. Good headphones but the noise from them when walking with them was too annoying.

Back looking for some on-ear headphones, fairly small, APT-X, USB rechargeable (preferably micro USB), noise cancelling, usable wired when the battery runs out.

Basically a smaller version of the QC35

@ChainBreaker I have one of these which seems OK https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B019IGWYAK or just buy a cheapo second hand android phone with SD slot from Amazon.

  • Cheers, yep just straight line. Basically trying to watch a movie with a baby sleeping next to you is hard. And the living situation won't be resolved for a while yet.
@Soul thanks for the input too. Never been a bose fan but will have a look. Noise cancellation is not a requirement though.

  • I'm definitely not a bose fan but they've received excellent reviews everywhere and so I thought I'd give them a go.

I have to be honest and say they might be my favourite pair of headphones I own already.

I didn't take them off for more than 5 mins in the office yesterday.

  • Didn't buy the PL50, bought the Shure SE215 instead. All the reviews suggest the build quality is much better than any other headphones, 2 year warranty instead of 1, and replaceable cables. If I spend £25 every 2 years to keep these going, I'll be happy.

  • Hmm, given the price difference I could be swayed by the Bose.
Would you say the are neutral sounding? The last Bose headphones I listed too were just an earful of muddy, boomy jelly sounds. They were the in-ear versions of the QC25 I think.

I have opened a rabbit hole though, started trawling reviews of wireless headsets - surround sound options, quality V price, comparing nuances of sound... I hate buying audio gear! (not really, I love it)

  • If it's just for sitting at home watching then you can get radio signal headphones with a base station pretty cheap compared to bluetooth ones (and depending on the device you may get annoying lag watching videos with bluetooth headphones)

  • I find them pretty neutral. If anything, they're slightly clearer in the mid and lower range than my P5s but again, this could be because they're still settling down. Bose have always had a slightly elevated top range but these appear less than previous Bose headphones i've listened with.

If i was being hyper-critical i'd say they have slightly less separation than the wired P5s but that could be bluetooth compression, the albums i've been listening to since i bought them or just my mind.

I use them mainly with my iPhone with a flat EQ and lossless tracks but also with the bluetooth function on my AV receiver for films and late night xbox sessions if the wife has gone to bed.

I am wearing them now and haven't taken them off since i got to work nearly 3 hours ago.

  • I have 425s and they are the best thing ever.

  • I was considering them but I need a new laptop and that would eat a huge amount of my budget.

  • I am just discovering this. Have never really read much about wireless 'phones till now.

The winners of this test seem to be a bargain and perfect for what I need as I already have "HiFi" cans.

  • You won't need a new cable. If they're the same as my 425's then you'll be fine. They're kevlar and beefy as fuq.

  • Looking for a decent pair of earphones after my most recent pair of Sennheiser CX300's died after only 3 months of light use.... Any recommendations?

Anyone tried the AKG K323 XSI? (http://homeavdirect.co.uk/akg-k323-xs-i-in-ear-headphones)

Looking for something in-ear and robust, much like dan on the previous page.

  • For in-ears, I'm a big fan of the Sony MDR EX650. They sound great for most things, have excellent isolation and they're pretty tough.

  • Had some Shure SE215s for about 5 years now. Really like them and Shure have a great replacement policy. Had some E2C's that died after about 23 months and they replaced them with the 215's. Think I paid about £20 for the E2Cs.

@Soul Have almost convinced myself to get a new phone, Macbook and Bose QC35s for work so that I can claim back VAT on the lot. Just need some nice reviews for the new Macs and I'll have persuaded myself (/my company) to upgrade my day job.

  • It's the right thing to do.

  • Cool, thanks for that. I might try the 450's without smartphone control, as I don't really have any need for it.... And the only other difference I can see is Alu vs Brass housing....

  • Brass! There's a layer of varnish over the metal which my acidic ears have degraded and it's gradually flaked off leaving a nice patina.

That's with roughly 4+ hours a day usage over a year...

  • I've literally just picked up a pair of these from Richer Sounds as I was sick of my crappy apple in-ears at work. As you would expect a world of difference!

  • Hey Matt, my headphone / earphone collection is in massive need of thinning and I have an as new pair of those Sony MDR-EX650's... I don't have the packaging anymore but they've genuinely only been used for a couple of minutes at home. Happy to sell them for cheaps...

  • fuck sticks... ive gone and lost my 'phones and mp3 player... dammit... I hope i accidentally dropped it in the gym...

  • Looking to replace my ancient and well loved SE530s - not sure what to go for...SE535/Audiofly AF180/Grado GR10e???? Any thoughts?

  • Gym had them!!! Woop woop...

No excuse to get another lot...
