I glued my last set of wheels. It's a faff and I don't have a garage so I'll stink the house out for a week.

Either you have a very sensitive nose or did something odd..

There's plenty of chat about Crr being higher with tape, but I can't find anything particularly solid on it. Given the huge variation in Crr values quoted between different tyre rolling resistance tests, I'm really not all that convinced.

Rolling resistance is significantly higher with tape than mastic-- and also higher with soft sticky road mastics than with so-called "track" cement. Difference is quite real.

edit - I've consulted my in-house CdA/Crr guru who says the it's real.

No need really... Carbon road wheels? Use standard road mastics and add some Patex in.. that is what team mechanics have been doing for years..

Tufo tape is the business though, much easier than glue.

Maybe for a noob. With a little bit of experience gluing tyres you'll find that it is so much easier-- even cleaner-- using mastic than tape (and a whole lot safer if done correctly).

No. But I can try to help you learn how to do it.. Probably best to start out with easy to mount tyres like Veloflex and not Conti (which are probably even more impossible with tape than glue)...

I follow the Neil Method® with exact same products (and his old wheels).

I wish I had time to glue yours @umop3pisdn .. I find the whole process extremely therapeutic.

Which is why they are on the shelf. From memory these are meant to have a super low CRR though, oddly for a butyl tubed tub.

Same here. It's one of those tasks which isn't hard at all, but requires concentration. My CD of choice while gluing tubs and rims is Thea Gilmore's Loft Music. #csb

Fitting them once they're all glued and ready to go I find quite stressful, however. Limited time to get the damn things straight and true, and copious opportunities to get glue everywhere.

My glueing got a lot less stressful when I was advised not to pump them up to "proper hard" after mounting them - as the tub will then try and roll on the rim, just as it does if you inflate it off the rim.

Instead of doing this put enough pressure in it to spin it, get it straight then roll the wheel on the floor making sure to press down firmly, then leave for 24 hours, then pump up.

It's stopped my tyres being very slightly off centre, which was driving me nuts.

My Conti tubs went on much easier & quicker than clinchers, using tape... getting them off on the other hand, took my thumbs about a week to recover.

I've very generously been donated some cross tubs by someone of this parish. There's some glue left on the base tape from when they were last used. Do I have to remove all of this glue before reusing them? Could i possibly put them in the freezer then break off the brittle glue, or is there another trick?

Leave it on. Remove any loose bits but taking it off is just crazy.

It will be reactivated by subsequent layers if glue. And glueing CX tubs is all about the layers.

Seconded for leaving the old glue on. I've swopped tubs between wheels, applying a fresh layer of glue over the old layer with zero issues.

Do you want a 60s Fiamme rim? Swap you for a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie if you can meet me at Waterloo.

Air leaking significantly from the bottom of the valve, not sure where the puncture is as they are unused -
What would you recommend - superglue around the valve? -
sealant into tube? Or both methods and hope.
Any advice gratefully received :)

If unused I'd return it/them.

what do i use to seal my tubular sidewalls? might be an odd question but can I just use building sealant ie http://www.screwfix.com/p/no-nonsense-all-weather-sealant-clear-310ml/7876d#product_additional_details_container ?

you can try ;) I dont see any reason why it wont work .. I am presuming these are CX tubs? In which case @andyp has the expertise.
