  • Pardon me for not being up to scratch on tech, but is there intel chips fast enough to warrant a complete overhaul of the line? From a design point of view it'd be interesting, but is there heaps of power (PWRRRR) to get as well?

  • In a word, no. The Sandybridge i7s and i5s from 2011 still measure close to the current lineup but they do so at the cost of more power and heat. It's pretty much plateaued now regarding speed. SSDs filled the void in big speed gains in the meantime but there's not much on the horizon that indicates computers will double in speed any time soon. Some stuff is being farmed off to GPUs but making everything massively pararllel is a huge amount of work for barley perceptible gains for most people.

  • The plus side is that you should get way more battery life with modest gains in oompf

  • Not too much difference to be honest at the high end.
The integrated graphics have seen more of an improvement though, as has power usage.

Enough to overhaul the line I think, but not enough to throw out the old laptop unless you have a particular need.

  • Bet we'll get just one line - macbooks. With integrated everything / nothing upgradeable so they make all the monies.

Or they'll start making their own laptop processors. Is that too far fetched?

  • They already make mobile chips so, not far fetched (albeit via third party manufacturers like samsung and TSMC etc).

  • I reckon it's a bit far fetched, it wasn't so long ago (ok, 10 years) they moved away from PowerPC to Intel chips and if they're going to start making an x86/x64 chip then that's a lot of patent wars and a big rival in Intel to go up against.

  • Looks a bit like a church doesn't it. Well, perhaps not a church but the headquarters of some spendy cult...

  • 100% nailed it there champ. Kinda creepy.

  • They've missed a trick by not putting apple trees in the apple store though.

  • No-one should be above a good pun.

  • Specifically of the MacIntosh cultivar - known for its tart flavour and tender flesh.

  • My iphone6 has stopped working with the screen freezing and becoming unresponsive. If I force restart it I can maybe get a minute’s use before it happens again so I don’t think the problem is the screen and a factory restore has made no difference either. When I do a factory restore the screen usually goes grey with a horizontal line running across (does not look healthy) although I have also had blue and green screens. I haven’t dropped it and with the screen intermittently working I don’t think that is the problem although admittedly don’t have a clue.

Has anyone had a similar problem or know of any fixes or is it good for the bin? Ideally I’d like to do the repair works myself as don’t fancy dropping big money on a 2-year-old phone that will be getting replaced at the end of the year although at the same time can’t go on using my old iphone4 as feel like I’m typing on a business card and my eyes are already bad enough.

    Help!

  • Take it to an Apple Store and try your luck there...

  • Yeah, I know that’s the wisest thing to do but with their out of warranty repair service coming in at £276.44 was hoping someone would know what the likely problem was and how best to fix it. Obviously I’d void anything there is to void by doing the repairs myself but with it due to be replaced at the end of the year wouldn’t necessarily mind.

I'll try and take it in over the weekend and hope they feel my pain and are feeling generous!

  • That's exactly it!

  • Apple store and throw the 6 years sale of goods act at them... if you bought it from the Apple store that is.

  • Just try your luck. I know of two cases where they've put new motherboards and batteries in laptops that were years out of warranty. It's really worth trying.

  • ^ Happened to me and my gf. No questions asked.

  • Bought from Apple mid-January 2015 through their 0% finance scheme (was bought over the phone rather than in a physical store).

Having a look at the 6 years Sale of Goods Act / Consumer Rights Act 2015 so will pop in over the weekend (fingers crossed).

Kboy – did they replace or give you a new phone?

You would expect a phone to last more than two years.

  • This was for fixing old laptops, the old alu model with fried motherboards

  • Just bought an Iphone 6s. Any recommendations for a decent case? Will need something that will protect it if dropped and as I like to use my phone for navigation when riding.

  • smashed the camera on mine, so get something that protects it properly
