  • hows j tek nexus combo?

  • @TM I like this.

  • I'd like it a lot more with a S500 tho'

  • S500? Chainset or levers?

If chainset you must mean s300, I admit I was thinking this earlier. Unnecessary effort though. And sram BB are terrible.

If levers, Sram levers are crap with cable discs. Braking performance at the moment is actually acceptable and they're yet to bed in.

  • It's a microshift shifter and it seems to be working ok so far. The first microshift product I've come across that doesn't feel like cheap shit and perform diabolically.

I've always thought bar end shifter would be as bad as DT but actually it's quite easy to reach to, don't mind it at all.

Do you have a link to the microshift shifter? Great to have an alternative to the jtek one, assume this is less pricey?

  • Sorry if I have misled you, this is an OTP Genesis.

I think this is the shifter.

  • Thanks!

  • I believe he's saying square taper BB outlast external bearings e.g.hollowtech II

May be true, but if putting crankset under greater effort (bunny hoping, going down staircases, skidding like it's 2007, etc...) I have in the past started rounding off square taper crank arms (either installed, correctly I assume, by me, or even professionally installed) which is really annoying, meanwhile I never had problems with external systems and their splined connection... That said, I'm heavy (95kg) and it was not necessarily top quality cranks... Some good Shimano cranks have been ok on my old mtb for instance...

    Functional BMX?

  • Regarding square taper or external bearing.

I prefer the latter for my functional builds, but find one big advantage of SQ in that you have multiple lengths available.
This lets you use a road crankset on a big tyred bike. And with the right length spindle you can get the smallest possible Q-factor without fouling the chainstays and you're not limited in chainring size either.

Personally, I still preferred to crush the chain stay on a brand new frame to try to fit Campagnolo Ultra Torque cranks with 135mm BCD and a 50t tooth ring...

  • @TM I meant FC-S500 chainset. Can be bought for very little money and a massive improvement over a regular ST singlespeed crank in my experience. I think it would sell a lot more if it wasn't for the Alfine moniker (I ran mine fixed).

  • 7900 looks positively neo-classical here.

@Lolo brings us back to ST vs OB BB debate though. I've always thought you can't beat a ST sealed unit for longevity/reliability.

The Alfine are nice though, I almost bought a pair for another project previously.

  • I never liked the 7900 cranks. Until now.

  • Perfection

  • That machine deserves some good pics. :)

  • This thread should just be named "Comfortable steel road bikes thread"
Needs more racks and bags and fat tyred snow beasts etc.

  • Ready for one week in Brittany with @spotter and @fox

First time my bike has been this loaded. I like how it handles, but I have brought a saddle bag in case I need to move stuff around.
