Do you have a speed/cadence sensor?
Some Garmins do distance based on the data from that device (if present) so if there's a problem with it (and it's not reporting the wheel turning) you get no distance covered.
I do not, but that doesn't seem to have been a problem before as I have been using GPS and it measured distance no problem.
I wonder if it has something to do with my watch needing an update.....
