Granted if you're competing you'll be at a disadvantage, although looking stylish while doing so. Not being the most competitive frame by today's standards there is a satisfaction in seeing your fitness/technique improve on a once competitive frame, whether that is just training. If I was on a carbon bike and you overtook me i'd certainly break a wry smile.
had this some years ago when i was fit and young. steel and 8speed going by a bunch of guys on italian crabonz with 11speed record uphill on sportive tilff-bastogne-tilff. they didnt like it!
