  • Oh. My. Days.

Revolution is so much fun. The hardtail garnered a fair bit of attention...

  • Revolution

    ?

I take it you're not referring to the vodka bar chain?

  • The downhill bike park, though I suspect if I turned up in the former riding a hardtail and wearing a full face helmet I'd probably get just as many odd looks.

  • Ashton Court / Leigh Woods? New to Bristol and mountain biking, but those plus bits further afield in eg. Mendips look the best to start?

  • Quantocks are great. Bit of a maze, takes a while to learn your way around, but there's LOADS of choose from.

  • Ah cool, yeah I was out in the Mendips and then Dartmoor this weekend and it was awesome but on 32c slicks, defs felt the need for a MTB. Will check out the Quantocks soon.

Reposting this from AQA as I want to get an all rounder cheap MTB capable of taking a rack and guards - thinking rigid 27.5 is the way to go?

Has anybody seen a Charge Cooker 1 and can tell me if it has mudguard and rack mounts? It looks like it has eyelets on the fork but I can't see any others. Looks like an excellent, cheaper alternative to a Pine Mountain 1. Any reason not to get one... aluminium fork is unusual but presumably they wouldn't have specced it if it was useless?

  • Yep, that one. I can tell you Ashton Court and Leigh Woods great place to start. I can't say anything else cos it's the first ride I've done around here. Only just moved.

  • Wicked, yeah me too. Will be hiring bikes from pedal progression to get started I think

  • Coolios. Fancy a pint sometime?

  • I had a poke about the DH zone at Swinley yesterday and bumped in to one of the trail builders there.

They've hit a snag in getting it open - a dedicated trail builder needs to bought on board to complete the zone, it seems. Nice, but unfortunately pricey. The Crown Estate needs to get their wallet open and are in the tendering process, but these things take time and a good look at their budget priorities. It's likely that new, Trail Team Swinley built trails will be opened before the DH Zone and TTS are looking for volunteers to help them get underway this November.

    Spades ahoy, basically.

  • You rode a hardtail at Revo? Well done. I wouldn't entertain the prospect myself.
What hardtail was it? And what was your favourite trail, section, etc?

  • Kona Taro 29er, 140mm Revelations up front. There's a pic upthread somewhere. Glad I swapped out the Ardents though, now running a Magic Mary/Mountain King II combo.

I rode pretty much everything (apart from walking/slithering down the big drop off on the pro line). Fave bits were the top section of Freeride, pretty much all of the pro line, and the L1/Mainline routes after the first fire road.
Having looked at a few videos, I was pretty confident I could ride most stuff there, my main concern was that I'd get loads of faster riders zooming up behind me. On the day though, the trails were pretty quiet (as generally you'll only have ~20 riders at the top of the hill at any one time, and there are plenty of lines to choose from). Plenty of chat from the uplift drivers and other riders about being the only hardtail there, a nice mix of encouragement and "Wow, you're brave/weird!".

  • Nice one. I thought about riding my Stanton there but then thought better of it. Lots of nice big holes to swallow up the 26" wheels. And the thought of getting hooked up on the steep sections on a hardtail put me off. I hired a Saracen Myst in the end, my first time on a downhill rig and that was excellent.

I might go back sometime with the Stanton, maybe...

Really I think Revs is best done on a long travel all-mountain or a downhill bike, but kudos for doing it on the hardtail.

  • Ooh, where did you hire the Myst from? That'd be a giggle, I've never ridden a full suspension rig, bar one trip down Pub Run at Greno woods on a YT Wicked.

I don't feel like I missed out on the true Revs experience by riding HT. All the steep and techy stuff is what I grew up riding (early/mid 90s, fully rigid). My main limiting factor is I've never got used to riding things like that fast. It would have been nice not to have to endure the braking bumps so much in a couple of spots, but then my mates were suffering on them too (Nukeproof Scalp, Process 153).

  • Revolution hire out the Mysts. Just ask them, they don't advertise it.

  • Good to know, cheers!

  • How are they going to stop the family units from doing a lemming over the gap jumps - looks terrifying.

  • How long until someone posts that Danny McAssKill video. Serious, no-one drinks redbull with a cream-tea. He's good on a bike, but meh. So contrived, so pseudo-nostalgic.

  • Being grumpy is fun. I didn't see that cos I don't follow that thread.

  • Quite honestly, as far as mountain biking goes, I much prefer the sort of 'just going out and exploring' type stuff that you do. I do enjoy watching the occasional bit of impossible skills riding though.
