For most things, I agree. But not for hire cars. They are cursed.
One time arrived at Pisa airport with wife and two small kids, put all the luggage in the boot, shut the boot, realised car key was in the boot and it had locked itself. Car hire office had no spare key and couldn't get one.
Located handy brick, stove in rear passenger window, opened door, released lock and retrieved key from boot. Back at car hire office explained that I needed another car as this one had a smashed window. Keys were swapped for next car.

Never buy the insurance. If it was worth buying they wouldn't sell it.
Self insure all the things.
