Thanks both. From what I gather, fitting the replacement hoods involves a full brake re-installation?

Nah, I was worried this would be the case but it turns out my little brother is stronger than me and was able to pull the new one over the brake lever and on (without stretching it!). I cut the old one off, couldn't manage to get it off over the front but didn't intend to use it again...

Just use a alcohol gel handcleaner to help it slid into position, the alcohol evaporates and then the new hood is safely in place.
