A lot of my staff joined speaking close to no English and left basically fluent, and they all grafted like fuck. They got the English proficiency which was largely what they were after- one guy worked for me for a year as a waiter then got a job as a marketing manager as his English had got to the stage that he could get the job he was after. I sacked more English people than any other nationality- usually for stealing.
A bit like Dammit mentions, I was talking to the manager of Pret a Manger recently (herself not British born) and she said in six years running the shop only one British person applied for a job.
I wonder how many people looking forward to British job for British people realise it will mean them taking shitty, minimum-wage work in retail.
