I was looking for this post. The bottom of those unscrews, and contains a rubber seal. That seal gets furred up with limescale. I've cleaned ours off a couple of times, and done it up again, which fixes it for another couple of years, when I then forget what I had done last time, and fuss over it for a week or so before doing it all over again.

make sure you turn off the flow valves to it before doing this obviously...
My boiler got fixed this morning: £300. Being a grown-up sucks.
