    From rwgps, the reasons to choose a gpx, the last paragraph being the most relevant.

    You have a GPS unit that doesn’t read TCX files. The eTrex, Oregon, Montana, and GPSmap series do not read TCX.
    You don’t care about riding a certain speed, and you don’t need the basic turn guidance offered by the TCX. If you have Garmin maps or OSM maps installed on a microSD card in your map-capable GPS unit, your GPS will provide native turn guidance and there is no need for the basic navigation offered by the TCX format.
    

    The edge series tend to treat gpx tracks and gpx routes as the same during the conversion to fit files, which are what the edge series use. i.e you load a gpx file and it is converted into a fit file and placed in the courses folder on your device.
    Some gps devices can use native gpx tracks and routes and they have their uses for different types of navigation.
