Ah I see. Out of interest, do R460s mount easily with standard clinchers and tubes? Some Stans are allegedly very difficult to mount with tubes
-
• #3878
yeah, they're a bit harder than regular rims, but work fine.

What's the rim of choice for disc cyclocross and general offroad adventuring? They may end up doing double duty on a 29er one day, so probably higher spoke count and wider is better. I'm planning to have them built by someone local but would consider OTP wheelsets if there's a good option. Tubeless preferred.
Reading back up the thread suggests stans something?

Stan's Iron Cross maybe? I've used them for the past two seasons without a single problem.

I want one of these please;

Thanks Andy.
Any reason I wouldn't go for a mtb rim, e.g. stans crest as discussed up-thread? Too wide for CX tyres?
Also, am I right in thinking stans rims will work okay with an inner tube too (but that it may be a headache installing the tyre due to the reduced depth of the profile inside the rim)?

Crest would be fine.
With a tube it'll be fine too.

I've read around the thread, I've UTFS but still I come here with questions!
Any ideas on small CX bikes OTP? My gf rides a 46cm road bike.. What are her options?
Also provisionally looking for me, I ride a 54cm usually but would be inclined to go smaller possibly for a CX bike. What is the cheapest decent disk-braked cx bike do you reckon?
Ta hive mind!

Knew it would happen eventually ;-)

46 is tricky, I'll have a look but I'd reccomend Trek Crockett in 54cm has all the features a CX bike should have and is one of the cheapest to buy as frameset (£550 RRP) AND has hidden mudguard mounts.
I'd build it with something like this if you are on a budget: https://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;product=168488;menu=1000,4,26

650....? Surly do a tiny straggler now.
Tire choice might be limited but as long as there's one good intermediate tyre it'll be fine.

Planet X probably has the answer.

A bit left field, but this is a great quality bike and would probably be the right size;

Very little bike for a lot of money .. no pun intended.

• #3891
Do you even economics of low volume production?
-
• #3892
I was thinking Surly for Nic's bike, thanks @Howard! I'll show her that as well @andyp but that's definitely the bling bling option in relation to our budget for these bikes right now..
Thanks @amey, I'll have a look, I don't want to go #fullbuyer for this, it's supposed to be cx on a budget, the bikes might have to be locked outside because one bed flat..
@BareNecessities Obvs.. It was only a matter of time.

Those island bikes areNUTZ.

still overpriced, mainly the spec .. BB7!? .. good market gap for Pinnacle.

Kidz cross bikes? They probably sell < 100 a year. Not really a market to battle for I'd have thought.
Crank choice is curious. Other than that, it's a pretty sensible cross rig for small people. Riders aren't going to challenge the brakes but they are going to crash a lot so cheap bomb-proof kit is pretty wise. Isla know their shit.

10 frames from Taiwan cost about £250 MAX each, I am currently in negotiations with MOQ with a vendor, the first prototype is almost there. I am trying to do this in India where trade relations with far east countries arent great so there is a HUGE customs/duty on things. Its much MUCH easier here, Bowman is a prime example.
Isla are good yes but there is a HUGE margin on those.

Yes - niche small volume stuff tends to have large margins - comparatively - so that they can cover their costs and turn a profit. That was kinda my point.
Whether you think the price is OK is irrelevant - it's niche and you don't want one. But those who do aren't buying on price because there's few alternatives. They also don't want headaches from fincky expensive to replace things like HDBs. Kid races it, it gets chucked in the shed, it works next week. Bosh.
It's a bit like buying Rapha, really. You don't want to sound like the moaners who believe that just because can be sold for less, it should. As if somehow the thought that went in to the design is worth nothing.
Yes. I just found Stans were easier to get a tyre to mount up. I've ran the R460 tubeless with cross tyres for the last month, and they've been good down to low pressures off-road.
