FWIW I've had no problems with 140 Ashimas, I'm 12 stone so somewhere in the middle. Reckon I'm going to try Hopes when these wear out, if only for a comparison.

Hopes
I just bought some spendy Hope rotors.
They are kinda disappointing - trail bike feels a bit underbraked now, compared to when I had the equivalent Shimano Icetechs.
They might improve in time. Or maybe the Icetechs are just that good. Might be the later, and that Icetechs are soft; I killed them after a couple of years.

Don't know! I don't have any rattle, but the left hood is ridiculously baggy now. I emailed Mantel (got them from there on Black Friday last year) and they've asked for pics, so I'll see what they/Shimano have to say. I have just ordered another set of hoods, but I guess there's no way to know whether they're an old batch or new?

im only 13.5 stone but the front has warped something chronic. and they absolutely eat through pads

think I will go for some centerlines http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/sram-centerline-1-piece-rotor/rp-prod120149

with rotor truing tools
thumbs are fine for that with rotor still on bike. Use gloves or clean with isopropyl alcohol afterwards

I'm using the centreline and they've been fantastic.
No warping and no braking issues.
I'm only 11 stone though so not sure what the small weight different would make if any. -

Yeah, was debating those too, seem pricy for a one piece design though. I suppose the 2 piece ones are 45 so somewhat reasonable.
-
• #2361
will give it a go later
-
• #2362
have only heard good things about them. way less "gappy" than the ashima ones which is what I want
-
• #2363
are 2 piece rotors that much better? I have ice tech ones on my 29er but its hard to compare

I heard one of the funniest things ever at the weekend. An 'old' friend was saying that disc brakes are shit. I asked him why, he didn't really have an answer, then I asked if he'd ever ridden a bike with them on, and he evaded with "They're shit because they pull to one side when you're braking heavily"

christ haha
-
• #2366
Yeah I went from a 'gappy' rotor. The main reason being I could hear the pads catching the edge of the gaps and could even feel the shudder as it went over them. The centreline are so smooth when braking. It's lovely. (As lovely as braking can get I suppose...)

exactly what I want, having the exact same issue. will get a pair in the coming months
-
• #2368
Probably not much difference in the real world but I haven't tried to compare.

Funnily enough, he's not wrong, but not as dramatic as he make it out to be.
-
• #2371
It's not noticeable, and isn't an issue though. Unless your bike is setup wrong. I think the larger problem for him is fear of change.
-
• #2372
I think the larger problem for him is stopping

Do you not feel the slightest of twist when riding with a straight steer fork?
Modern fork almost eliminate this, but I had notice that slight flex, but it was way too small to really impact the handling.

Yeah. That could be applied to most of his posts. Wait until he goes off on tyre pressurezzzzzz........
someone linked some epic disc brake service kit (with rotor truing tools), thought I had bookmarked it but clearly not and I now need to buy it as my front is super wobbly. perhaps it was @edscoble ?
suggestions for good 140mm rotors also appreciated - would recommend heavier people to avoid the 140mm ashima weight weenie rotors
