If they are so are Halfords. I'd be interested to know if independent bike shops are experiencing a slow down. Very much not the case at my LBS - they can barely cope with all their customers - but they are very good so perhaps not typical.
I suspect the market is maturing and even more recent converts to cycling are going for fancier bikes from independents or custom options and this might be why Evans et al are suffering. But I have no evidence for that.

Evans don't sell much that can't be had online.
Any buying the big ticket items from them gives you only a scant advantage, in terms of support, over buying online.
To add insult to injury, I can buy a cannondale bike dirt cheap from a shop in Norfolk, have it shipped to me in London, then get Evans to deal with the warranty issues when it breaks.

Yeah but you was the only one in million doing that so does not qualify.

I think there's a decline in casual cyclists buying bicycles.
There was a boom period with the introduction of cyclescheme et al and over the olympics but a large majority of people are content with one bike and will see no need to upgrade until they have run their current steed into the ground.
I'm sure some people have moved towards the boutique or customised market but not enough to account for the down turn in bike sales.
I also think that local bike shops will have an uptake in trade as consumers become cleverer and realise the bicycle community that surrounds them not just the "name brand" large retailers.
I would imagine over the next few years the sales of bikes would remain relatively constant with the large retailers wethering the storm while some small to mid size businesses especially those without a large enough customer base or those currently expanding may not be so lucky.

Anyone know of an Evans discount code?

Big up to the guys in the KX branch for being nice to my female friend with the bright red hair.
-
• #966
They price match anything no need for discount codes
-
• #967
Do they? Their website seems to have a pretty strict list of who they'll price match...
Basically I'm after a pair of Aftershokz Ti bone conduction headphones. I've got a cheaper pair at the mo' which I've mostly killed by sweating on them but can't warranty return them as I didn't buy them from a legit dealer. Want to buy from a legit dealer but everyone seems to be selling them for the exact same price.

Went to Evans in Brentford for a bb tool. I see lots of negativity towards this branch on LFGSS (big up!) and also in google reviews.
Simon the manager was a nice dude. He offered assistance and was very friendly. I was after some anti seize as well and he offered to order it in as none were in stock in any stores (He checked another branch for me).
If this branch's staff is struggling with maintenance or build schedule then Evans should offer them support via staff training/more people/better processes. Its easy to bash people and more difficult saying more productive comments.
I hope they get better as little mistakes is costing that branch alot of credibility.

My freewheel exploded on the way to work. Popped into Evans at St Pancras and the mechanic changed it for me there and then, despite that they were fully booked. Just charged for the part.
Great service; much appreciated.

@hoarderofgoodies - 'If this branch's staff is struggling with maintenance or build schedule then Evans should offer them support via staff training/more people/better processes. Its easy to bash people and more difficult saying more productive comments.'
This.
I just started at Evans part time (between jobs) because I like bikes and cycling and stuff.I have quite a lot of management experience in pubs and restaurants and have to say that the Evans systems and processes could be improved on a lot. I cringe when customers are standing there just waiting to pay for a tube and we have to log in to 2 different drop downs and go through 3/4 screens just before you can scan the bloody thing. You can only imagine what the the stock transfers/maintenance booking/bike ordering processes are like.
Everything is so convoluted. Nice people though.

I do agree, the stucture could be better but from my experiences, it's pretty delicated and easy to go wrong if you do not follow the correct procedure.
-
• #972
How much cheaper and why Evans when there's a warranty? Asking as I'm looking to get a CAAD12.
-
• #973
Cause Evans is the main buyers of Cannondale directly from CSG (the distributor).

Needed some cables for a build, so popped into an Evans I was passing earlier.
The guy on the shop floor told me I would have to speak to the workshop, because cable kits are a 'specialised thing' that only mechanics can talk about.
Down in the workshop, they had cable kits, but only Shimano compatible ones.
I asked them what do they do when somebody asks them to service a Campagnolo equipped bike, in response to which I was told 'nobody' rides with Campagnolo kit anymore.
There you go then, I must be the only one!

What follows from that is actually that you are nobody. :)
U work there ?
